I loved Cub Scouts and Webelo Scouts, but my local BSA troup was a neo-fascist premonition of some of the current times. Example-A: Our junior scout leader, whom was aparently a “vegitarian” got his sleeping bag urinated on with a chunk of ham inside. Not sure what that has to do with “to help other people at all times” but, I guess the leading brown-shirts in the troop thought they were being “morally straight.” The Civil Air Patrol was about the same…
Growing up in Boston, I also had a bunch of buddies that were Altar Boys and though I’m not aware of any gross trauma suffered by them, it seemed weird to be a young teenager invited into the rectory by a full grown men, in a position of power, and provided with Communion wine.
The wierdest part is that no one discussed the elephant in the room. No one. Spotlight did a pretty good job of covering that kind of shenanigans.

But over the years, I have come to know many folks who had wonderful experiences with outstanding, responsible leaders with splendid adventure training in these or other simmular organizations.

The whole “Youth Organizations” attached to groups that are typically seen as “beyond reproach” morally have some of the biggest scandals. I know there was something weird that happened with a youth leader in one of my churches growing up and it was very hush hush and he went away and moved out of town. So did the girl. The dude had a son in the group and he was very angry towards everyone afterwards. I can’t say it was something like that but churches and groups like BSA of America do tend to do those things. Anything dealing with overnight stays with no communication is a big red flag.

So we are on the Halloween movie randomizer and this loaded up for tonight’s viewing.

How is this a Halloween movie? Also, how do watch it and not end up riffing the hell out of it?

Did I say this was a Saturday night event during High School and College? :joy::joy::joy::joy:

It’s definitely a Halloween weekend midnight movie but yeah. I grew up with that being every Saturday midnight or at least once a month.

I am shocked to see the IMDB user rating is only 7.4… I can think of few movies that people are more fanatical about or obsessed with. I’m guessing that rating is due to a segment of people who just chanced upon it and were like, wtf.

My wife (to be) and I went to the Blue Mouse to participate in the show. Because my (yet to be) MIL had wanted my wife to come home from the dorms for the weekend, and got turned down for the movie, she decided to come to the Mouse and see why a movie was more important than a weekend with her parents - and took the 16 year old version of my BIL to watch, too. We had no idea they were going to be there.

Per protocol we got to the movie a half an hour early to make sure we got tickets (yes there were times they sold out, though not that Saturday), and our group of 10 waited to get in for the show. While we were all chatting, in strolls MIL and BIL to get tickets for the movie. My wife was in shock to see them. Anyway, they get their tickets and then go to the concessions where they proceed to but drinks and popcorn. At this point our group started debating whether we should save them from themselves, but decided the “full virgin experience” was needed. Of course they thought our bags of stuff were food for the movie, and were amazed they let us bring in our own stuff.

Needless to say, before the movie started the Hostess informed the audience of the “5 ■■■■■■■ rules for the movie,” “Ring Around the Virgins,” then the lights dimmed and pandemonium reigned for an out and a half. After the rainstorm scene, my wife checked in on MIL and BIL to make sure they were OK - they were in shock! They couldn’t believe people acted like this at a movie. Their drinks and popcorn were ruined. To their credit they stayed for the whole movie.

It took them years to fully sort that out. :joy::joy::joy:

MIL might still be picking rice out of her hair - 36 years later.

Some of our friends have never let us forget our “allowing” such a thing to happen.

By happenstance, I ended up watching “A Million Miles Away,” a true story on Amazon about a Hispanic migrant farm worker who became a NASA astronaut. I thought it might be kind of hokey, but is a true story, well told, very moving, and if you happen to have a strong affinity for the Hispanic culture, as I do, it will mean even more to you.

Highly recommended.

From the Halloween list…

Watched this last night for family movie night and with 2 kids with hispanic heritage, it was really good. Got dusty a few times. My teenager thought parts were ‘cringe’ (dating scenes), but everyone liked it. Highly recommend. And as a 1-time rejected astronaut applicant, I guess I should have kept trying haha.

We watched “Slotherhouse” last night. If you have Hulu, have a couple drinks or something else to loosen up and watch. I laughed for 90 minutes straight.

Just finished Season 2 of The Sopranos.

It’s pretty good, but as gangster shows go, it can’t even hold a candle to The Wire.
