Vernon Reid with Carlos Santana
I don’t have anything specific, I’ve just been listening to bunch of stuff from the late 80s to mid 90s. Stuff that I listened to then. I was just amazed by the memories that came back. Things what were, or are still associated with certain songs. The hopes and dreams I had then, things that have changed.
Just a long strange trip it’s been I suppose, to borrow something from the Grateful Dead. I guess I was wrong, I do have something to add.
I’ve been trying to work on improving my singing (to go along with my primary focus which is the guitar work), and remembered a couple of really old favorite tunes that fit within my limited vocal range. They are very different, vocally, and musically, but both great tunes.
The first was a favorite when I was in high school, as I was taking up the guitar and had discovered blues. The second, is a wonderful old Great American Songbook Tune, played and sung by the son of one of my favorite Jazz Guitarists Bucky Pizzarelli. His son, John, is a spectacular guitarist, who likes singing as much as I do, and perhaps as I, would be better served focussing on the guitar ![]()
I remember that album from my student DJ days at KOHS. I would not be shocked to find that one on someone’s Yacht Rock playlist.
MAN ALIVE.. that is a name Ive not heard of thought about in decades. A bit of Jimmy Buffet, a bit of Steely Dan, and a bit of Ambrosia.
The hilarious thing about the term “Yacht Rock” is it was intended as a joke, a mild put down.
Now it’s a popular genre on Spotify.

Really digging the new Blind Equation album. It’s a batsh*t mix of hardcore, emo, grind, and industrial, all run through a chiptune filter. Think Ministry, AFI, Igorr, and At the Gates all had a head-on collision with the Super Mario Bros soundtrack.
Even though emo vocals can get on my nerves pretty quickly, I really dig these kid’s sound (seriously, the singer looks like he’s fifteen). Also, they have a keytar player wearing a Sigh t-shirt…it’s impossible to go wrong with that combo! ![]()
I adore the BBC Proms. I watched them on TV while in London and up and down the UK from Wales to Scotland. Sadly, nothing appealed to me when I was in London to shell out the cash to go watch. Now, this is the show I wanted to see. They now have the whole performance as an album on Spotify:
I went to see U2 one time in my life and it was because Florence was the opener. U2 were great but nobody there that sweaty night in Nashville was ever out working Florence.
I had never heard of Florence and the Machine, but they did three really excellent songs for, of all things, the Final Fantasy XV video game soundtrack. It included a really great rendition of “Stand By Me” (starts at 5:50 below) along with two other original songs.
While I doubt they’re something I’d spin on the regular, I did really like all three of these. And being a huge Final Fantasy nerd, I’ll always have a soft spot for any musician involved with that series. ![]()
Just bought tickets to see Bad Religion/Dropkick Murphys on Saturday night. It’ll be the first time I’ve seen Bad Religion since 1997(!) and my first time seeing DM.
My favorite Bad Religion song that I’m hoping is on the setlist.
I’ve never seen Dropkick Murphys live and am not overly familiar with their songs, but this sure looks like fun.
Dis gonna be good. ![]()
Saw Dropkick Murphys in Sparks, Nevada back in 2009-10 range and they put on a blistering show. So good.
Edit: it was March, 2008. Still awesome show.
I’m incredibly excited to see both bands. I think the last time I saw a punk show was probably 20+ years ago. I’ll just need to set aside three days after to recover. LOL
If any UFN’ers are going to be there, ping me. First beer’s on me. ![]()
Loved Ten Years After as a teen. Still do.
