From the world of Jazz, this is the time of the year that Winston Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center crew hosts their Essentially Ellington program. It is an annual competition where High School Jazz Orchestras compete at Lincoln Center. The schools that get picked to compete go to NYC for two weeks for the competition.
My wife’s cousin Kenny is a member of JALC and has been for over 20 years. His “job during the competition is working with the band to help them prepare for the event. He calls it his favorite time of the year.
Haven’t you heard, Trump is taking over the Lincoln Center and has announced he has replaced the Essentially Ellington program with " The Wonders of Welk " to be led by Lee Greenwood and Pat Boone.
A wonderful a wonderful. Turn off the bubble machine. ![]()
A thank you Bobby and Cissy.
And now here are the Lennon Sisters, singing “A Can’t Get No Satisfaction”
The fact that you dad transferred precious vinyl’s of significant material worth to stay within the family; but more important, the fact that he listened to every one of those platters over many years is like sitting around a fire telling metaphoric stories. The story is the song and the song is the heart of our lived experience.
Brava!
Wait! That’s a joke right?
Ever see this video about the Essentially Ellington comp. Very inspiring and fun watch. Amazing young musicians who really swing:
Cool stuff !!
As I was searching for audio for the Lalo Schifrin comments in the RIP thread, the YouTube algorithm, presented the following tunes to me, and as I was posting on Utefans, I listened enthusiastically, as every one of the offered tunes has a special meaning to me.
My only observation is that the choices presented could NOT have been based upon any sort of recent listening habits, so I’m concluding that the algorithm is monitoring a bunch of people using Youtube, who have excellent taste ![]()
Phil Lynott was an incredible talent and an absolute force - and like so many others, the world tragically lost him too soon. If you have never seen it, do yourself a favor and check out the documentary Songs For While I’m Away. Highly recommended.
Yacht Rock! 8m getting into being an old fogie.
4 years later and this debut album by a localish college kid still gets me in the gut. When I feel some summer malaise “Dawn” by YEBBA helps me fully feel the grief that lingers in my body. The album written as piece for her mother that passed always helps me get off the mat because nobody has time for an conflicted emotionally man in this country.
I can’t give this enough stars!
Jon Baptiste is among my favorite, perhaps my very favorite, young/influential/popular composer/musician.
He performs (as he does here) in a manner that has my 30 year old son (and his girlfriend) commenting very favorably, at the same time his 60+ parents are happily tapping toes and hearing/remembering his musical predecessors/influencers, musicians like Stevie Wonder.
Since he left the Colbert show, I don’t manage to hear enough of him. Thanks for posting!
Living Colour’s “Tiny Desk” concert was amazeballs. Corey’s voice hasn’t lost a bit of it’s power and Vernon can still shred. My God.
“Solace of You” has always been one of my favorite Living Colour tunes.
Veron Reid is a magician . The band is still on top of its game.
