The official "What are you listening to right now?" thread

It kind of looks like a younger version of kawaii metal - Baby Metal.

A spectacular performance of a wonderful piece of music.

And some nice camera work to capture the keyboard action.

I played piano fairly seriously for many years as a youth, and had an uncle who played well enough to have played this piece with the Salt Lake Symphony (not the Utah Symphony) , but I could never have even imagined personally doing any of that!

The second movement is some of the most beautiful music ever written.

Thanks for posting!

(Finally posting - following a several minute period where I could continue to hear the final minutes of the concerto, but not post, (as I now assume) I was writing my comments during what was (probably) a website shutdown due to the just-after-midnight hour.

I’ll stream the symphony again as I go to sleep tonight. THanks again!

Glad you enjoyed it. Yunchan made a huge splash at The Cliburn (used to live in FW and loved attending it in person).

FWIW – given your piano background, you may want to check out this review of Yunchan’s performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhUFLepewgA

In honor of the recently departed…

This will forever be my very favorite of many Sly Stone tunes (I don’t think there is a bad one). I’ll never forget my first hearing of the unbelievable rhythm of this tune as a young lad through the earphone of my 6 transistor radio walking around the Avenues in the 60’s, and wondering what the time signature was.

People still argue over it, but I’ve always thought it was obviously 12/8.

Regardless, try to walk like a normal human being while listening to it

Definitely wasn’t expecting to, but I’ve been listening to the new Sleep Token album pretty much non-stop for the past month. Partly because it’s catchy as hell, and partly because it’s a “halfway” album between radio pop and metal that me and kids both like. I quite dig how they can do the poppiest, earwormiest tune and then suddenly drop an absolutely crushing metal riff out of nowhere. That riff that comes in at 3:26 of “Caramel” is just…dayum.

They’re not a metal band (they’re radio rock with some metal moments) but have definitely found a strong spot in my rotation.

Side note: I knew they were coming this fall and checked ticket prices. $400 for nosebleeds furthest from the stage. Around $1,100 for floor seats. Holy forking shirtballs. :open_mouth:

No fun music to post today, but I did find a nice set of over the ear Sennheizer headphones on Amazon recently. I got them because the doctor prescribed Brown Noise therapy for my Tinnitus, and I can’t be keeping my wife up at night with the sounds. Listening to the sound has me feeling like I am sleeping again. It’s been a while.

The added bonus is being able to listen to tunes I like and ignoring the other noises around me. I’ve never even worn true noise canceling headphones before I bought these, and I’m glad I did.

Finally listened to the new album because I hadn’t heard anything of theirs despite all the hype. Holy crap does it suck. If that’s what kids today think is metal, I’m glad I grew up in the 80s with real stuff

It’s not metal. It’s pop music with occasional metal-ish moments.

I still dig it though, YMMV.

I’m still mad at Bowie for dropping dead on us all, but never really got into his NIN foray and BLACKSTAR even less, but hey, my buddies whom mutually love so much think I’m a philistine.

A Philistine…yes you are.

About Bowie dying too soon and NIN…not so much.

“I’m Afraid of Americans” was an amazing song (and eerily prophetic), but I never much liked the rest of the Outside album. Which is odd, because it came out in the heights of my NIN fandom.

Now Blackstar was just brilliant, so it’s ok for you to be wrong. Happens to the best of us.

Blackstar was a masterpiece, for the very fact alone that he made his death into art. Legendary.

I’m not going to post the video because the end is a little risqué for UF.N (but it is easily found, making the rounds lately on Instagram, FB and other platforms)
I was recently re-introduced to his epic, trifecta performance on SNL from 1979.
I distinctly remember seeing the whole show. The then novel, green screen puppet performance for When You’re a Boy was literally mind blowing. I mean, truly inexplicable, unbelievably, bizarre; requiring quite a bit of chutzpah and even more talent.
All the while duping the censors for the, well, shall we say “finale” at the very end.

Piano player is just phenomenal! Back in the day when bands could really play their instruments and were listening and talking to each other.

Since I will never actually buy vinyl again, not since my Three Dog Night album turned into a wavy frisbee circa 1971, I’ve been getting into some really old school stuff - Jazz, Sinatra, Franklin, etc.

This one is the first Jazz song to break into the Top 40, back when 330 and I were barely pups, 1962.

There’s a bunch of stories about VG’s genius and wonderful personality as part of the San Francisco jazz scene. ‘Cast Your Fate to the Wind’ was the inspiration for A Charlie Brown Christmas. Here’s a quick, oft told story when he came up with ‘Linus and Lucy’ calling the producer Lee Mendelson in the wee hours.

My daughter (16) has become enamored with jazz over the past couple years. My father in law had a huge jazz vinyl collection that he was going to get rid of, and she took it on a whim. Bought her a cheap record player, and she spends most days spinning old Dave Brubek and Miles Davis albums in her room.

Jazz has never been my musical style of choice (I can totally appreciate the musical talent, but most of it is “nails on a chalkboard” to me), but I love that she digs it. Doubly so when it gives her something to connect with my aging father-in-law about.
