Rising’s coming back

QB Mack Howard has entered the transfer for Utah. Does my fandom need to be questioned if I didn’t know he was a Ute?

If it does, count me in too. I’ve literally never heard that name before.

He is the 3-4 star true freshman QB the Utes signed last year. Word is he has been pretty slow to develop and was very far from being ready to contribute.

So, at QB for 2024, Utah has Rising, Rose, and Wilson. Wilson will be a true freshman coming off surgery, Rose hasn’t taken a snap, and Rising has a history with injuries.

He was the practice squad qb. But didn’t hear his name until everyone was looking for who was next after Nate and Bryson …

Especially now that they will have at least 5 games vs the MWC going forward.

So, nothing to worry about at all, right?

Yeah, I mean, heaven forbid Rising gets hurt again, but (I hate to say it) chances are decent he will. If that happens, Utah could be in the same position it was this year. Can you find an experienced P5(4)-level quarterback who is willing to come and be ready to step in for Rising? If you do that, are Wilson and Rose going to be sour? It’s a little concerning.

Does anybody have a QB that has started and finished at the same school?

Off the top of my head I can’t think of one in the PAC. Without looking it up, I know that Southern Cal, Oregon, Oregon St, Washington, Colorad9, and Utah all have QB’s that started school somewhere else.

Isn’t Noah Fifita an Arizona original? He is up for freshman of the year award.

Don’t know. I didn’t list him because I wasn’t sure. But the movements of QB’s is crazy. It’s a wonder anyone has a backup QB anymore.

I would expect them to get an experienced transfer for insurance. Let’s hope they can get a good one.

Why not recruit from the portal for a QB1 and let that person compete for the starting spot? Recruiting for insurance doesn’t feel that palatable to me.

Is it just me, or is quitting the team and wanting to play in a bowl game kind of like handing your spouse divorce papers and asking for sex next week?

Because no one on the planet expects there to be a competition . Rising is #1. Period.

It depends on the circumstances. I don’t see these guys as quitting, most are seeing the hand writing on the wall and are just looking for a chance to play.

We now have a starting QB who has sat out an entire season due to a significant injury.
Do you feel that there are no better options?

Maybe with some guys. However, I get the sense that Barnes knows he doesn’t have the skills to be a long-term starter at Utah and simply wants to find somewhere he can do that. To me, that’s not “quitting on the team”.

I think he wants to a) use the bowl game as an opportunity to showcase his skills and b) he honestly wants to give one final effort for this team.

I’m glad the coaches are giving him the chance, and hope he balls out in Vegas and gets some great G5 offers.

One of the best QB’s to ever play here.

The coaching staff has made it very clear he will be the starter.

Don’t get me wrong, I love that kid and hope he shines in the bowl game too. I guess “quit” was the wrong word😔
