Does this mean if there are any signs with the term “yewts” at their games they will be penalized?

Excellent question. They are denigrating the people of a native American nation.

I can see it now, they will have their “chant police” at every away game, with their lime green vests and whistles to call attention to anyone getting out of line.

So, will all of the discriminatory acts BYU takes towards their own students and faculty be subject to fines?

Now i am seeing some conjecture that the conference does not have the authority to impose on-field penalties outside of the NCAA rule book. So they can fine a team or expel the culprits, but they can’t change the rule book and impose a 15 yd penalty or any other in game penalties.

We’ll see how this all shakes out with public universities that deal with freedom of speech issues.

BYU: always more trouble than they are worth.

Yormark is a yokel. Fine? fine. Expel offenders? great. Not confer with the rules and refs? looks like an idiot.

Quote from Terry McAulay, NCAA rules analyst:

"I don’t know what they think, but I do know the rules do not allow them to instruct the officials to penalize a team 15-yards for this type of fan conduct.

I also know they did not clear this with the rules committee or anyone else."

I’m watching Terry’s posts. He is fending off the BYU mob. It’s hilarious and sad at the same time.

I just can’t understand why no other school in the conference deals with this chanting issue S/

There will be only one recourse for any team that plays byu-p in the future. Simply take the forfeit.

I think the chants need to be dealt with, but you don’t have to go full Pat McAfee on the schools or the teams

Do I like the chants? No

Do I think byu should reflect on why everyone doesn’t like who owns them? Yup.

I see this differently (probably no surprise). The chants are obscene attacks on a discrete religious minority. Imagine the followings:

Chanting “F the Baptists” at a Baylor game. Or:

“F the Catholics” (or "F the papists) at a Notre Dame , Gonzaga, or Georgetown game.

“F the Jews” at a contestj with Yeshiva University.strong textg

It’s not decent and it’s not what we do in America. I support removing the offenders from the stadium and banning them for a set time period.

I don’t see a problem with this. Like when Russell Westbrook pointed out the idiot who said something unacceptable to him at a Jazz game. Gotta go, bro.

But Yormark’s idea of penalizing the home team with an unsportsmanlike? Terrible idea, opens the door for a small group of trouble-makers to come to town to punish the home team, presumably at a crucial point in the game.

(Wait a minute.. if this somehow goes through, in honor of our Utefans fallen funnymen from the early days - Senioritis & Mr. Crimson - we owe it to them, and to Brett Yormark to find a strategically important home game on BYU’s schedule next year, dress in blue and make a trip to Provo, armed with an innovative chant that would punish BYU 15 yards at the right time of the game. It would require some creative thinking but I have full confidence we could summon that, in honor of our fallen pranksters.)

Um…have you seen America lately?

Spot on.

On our way out of RES last weekend a chant of, “F&@$ BYU,” broke out among the kids in the east concourse. Yeah, they’re dumb college students, but that is ridiculous. It wasn’t one or two kids either. It was dozens. The U needs to make it very clear to the MUSS that they’re not interested in the risk of being fined and that anyone doing that in 11/7 can expect to be summarily escorted out of the facility.

. Point taken. Here’s my revision:

IMO it’s not what decent people do in America.

On that we definitely agree.
