Got to be honest, I wouldn’t be too thrilled right now if I were a BYU fan. I get that they’ve had some injuries, and one significant one, in particular. But when you have the best player in the country on your team and another potential NBA player running point, you shouldn’t fall behind by 36 at home to anyone.
just plain weird
Yeah, but everything UofU related has to do with hoodlums…at least that’s what their fans tell us.
Another great Y athlete going forth to represent the Lord.
Better hoodlums than anti-semites.
I hope the kid gets the help he needs. Spiraling is never a good thing.
I get the BYU mocking angle, but I have to agree with Greg, here. After they leave the school I really don’t care, and I’ll always appreciate Puka’s brother Samson snagging a clutch pass from Huntley to help us break through at UW in Seattle.
Good luck, Puka.
One of my favorite PAC12 era memories!
Samson also had the first offensive TD in the 2018 comeback win over TDS. Crazy to think he would then have one against Utah for TDS three years later to break the 9-game streak.
Ever since I started hanging out with my Tongan “cousins” and absorbing their way of looking at things… even though I still get wound up about the rivalry and wanting “them” to suffer defeat, I see the bigger picture.
The Polynesians don’t have any problem whatsoever if somebody is one team, their sibling on another. My experience in social settings is they don’t care what church anyone goes to, either. To them, it’s just not important. We’re that way here, too.
Our old BB player Paul Afeaki said when he was in Utah he’s Mormon, when he’s in Tonga he’s Catholic, and many thought that sounded a little crazy. But in a Polynesian way, it made perfect sense - it’s all about blending in where you are and who you’re with… the distinctions and dividing lines are cultural aspects we have in our culture.
This explanation is a bit beyond who is on what sports team, but hopefully it adds some understanding.
Ah, Paul Afeaki. Younger fans might not know who he is. Afeaki was a backup center to Walter Watts on the terrific 1990–91 team (he started the following year after Watts graduated). A few days before a late-season game at home against TDS, Afeaki was shot in the shoulder while driving his car (with his wife, I believe). The incident caused Afeaki to miss the TDS contest, which was a huge game. Utah won and clinched the WAC title, with still two games left to play, including a game at TDS the following week. There was an emotional scene after the win and Utah was cutting down the nets with Afeaki, sling and all, taking his part to cut the nets.
Afeaki returned for the WAC Tournament and NCAA Tournament. He had a solid senior year the following season and got a look by the Jazz in summer camp. I remember watching him the Rocky Mountain Revue get a few minutes. Not sure what ever happened to him, but he has a pretty cool story.
