Mr. Haney for Pac 12 Commissioner!
I think we are maybe talking about two different things. You are talking about how many of those brands were built over 80 years. I am talking about how you build a conference that can maximize its TV revenue, in today’s age and circumstances.
Those CFB brands in the south have already got theirs, I am talking about how the PAC can build its brand and succeed in today’s environment, and it isn’t by inviting the type of brand and market SMU represents.
LA County has more people than all of Georgia. The sub par play is why the Pac (compared to the SEC) is why the payday didn’t come. I completely agree outside of Atlanta there is less to do but let’s be real. The SEC’s best players often times come from inside the Pac 12 blueprint. Bryce Young ain’t leaving Southern California if there was a school worth playing for there. Same with Najee Harris leaving the bay area.
On the field is why the SEC has gotten powerful. Also, let’s not act like the Big XII area isn’t crazy for football.
On the field matters more than market size.
We are talking two different things and the same thing. I think your thinking is more in line with Big 1G thinking. Something that has rendered them a one and half team league, IMHO. It could all flip and I could be wrong but the SEC creating the conference title and making it about competition in 1992 is how the SEC got to where it is now.
At this point, I must be one of the very few, if not the only one, on a Utah sports forum who really doesn’t care how the P12 conference or where Utah football lands.
Don’t get me wrong, I will always pull for the Utes. Certainly hope Utah ends up being in a good conference and do well. The angst expressed by certain fans are interesting, especially the ones on the other Utah board. Hehe
What’s the downside of just staying at 10 teams? It used to be that we need 12 teams for a conference championship game. Is that a concern anymore?
At this point the PAC should stay at 10. The only reason to add two more schools would be if the TV deal increases significantly by doing so. If the TV money isn’t any different then the PAC shouldn’t expand.
DNews hack Dick Harmon ran a column based on rumors of the PAC’s demise, last week, similar to the BS that came from B12 land last summer.
An insult to hacks everywhere.
I didn’t know the Dickster was doing columns from the nursing home.
Dude I want to get in on this and acquire the nickname “Dickster.”
The University of Utah research funding was $668 million in 2022. That’s up from the high $300 million range when Utah was in the MWC.
There’s no way to know what the financial impact is for Utah being associated with the PAC12 conference, but its been said that its significant.
Leaving the PAC12 isnt simply just an athletic decision it impacts much more than just athletics.
Truth. There was a tangible benefit to joining the PAC.
Ask the development office folks, ask the admissions office, look at faculty recruitment. When the history of the U is chronicled in 20 years, joining the PAC was an inflection point.
For better or worse, college athletics in the US is a major marketing engine.
On the athletics side, I can remember when the entire athletics department budget was less than our current TV contract. We may be spending a lot more money, but we are getting a lot more and the department isn’t running deficits to do it.
Sigh. We’ve likely screwed the pooch at this point for a Big12 invite, and all from mere hubris. We should have been leading the charge, or at the very least securing a seat at the table from our best escape hatch. Instead we’ve thumbed our noses, and there’s a great chance we get left in the cold here. It’s so stupid.
Big12 doesn’t need our Utah market after adding BYU. CBS, NBC, Turner, and Fox have all removed themselves from Pac12 bidding, and ESPN has retreated significantly. AppleTV or Amazon aren’t going to cut it and we all know it. We should have been angling to be included in a Big12 migration. We’ll see what happens but I’m afraid we bit the hand that would have fed us.
The B12 would jump at adding any school in the PAC.
Don’t panic. These will be business decisions, not decisions rooted in someone’s ego.
Little brother down the road is actively trying to will the supposed demise of the PAC 12 into existence. They are terrified that being in the middle of the big 12 will continue to leave them in the shadow of Utah if things continue as they have over the past few years. They hate the fact that Utah has had the spotlight as they have gone to the Rose Bowl the past 2 years and try to denigrate the importance of that stage in an effort to make Utah look bad in vain hope that they can benefit. The fact of the matter is that even in defeat Utah has occupied a place of prominence in College football conversations the past few years. This is something little brother craves. This latest round of blather about the big 12 supposed importance and the potential lessening of the PAC12 is mostly just little brother jumping up and down screaming “look at me, I’m important too!”
I’m not worried much about the future of the PAC 12 whether they add more schools or not. There are plenty of eyeballs wanting to watch current member teams on TV. The numbers will come out in due course and we will get on with the future. Go Utes!!
