Florida game

Full props to Richardson, that kid’s a stud.

We absolutely had our chances to win and couldn’t convert. That sucks, but everything is still there to play for. Go win the P12 again and this one will hurt a lot less.

Plus trying to thread the needle at the end on second down. That’s a fourth down throw when down by 4+.

Running QB’s have been our Kryptonite. It was supposed to be a close came. We had our chances to put this game away, but came up short.

Props to the Gators on the win.

The good news is this team has been tested. They came close to winning that game. They will come back a better squad after this game.

I’ve not seen the Utes play that well so early in the season–perhaps ever. And, no less, in facing a stud QB, on a national stage, a notorious stadium, a hostile enviroment, and a difficult climate.

We’re in for a great season.

I figure the Gators to be the SEC spoilers for 2022. One of the teams trying to play Alabama in the CCG are going watch their chances end. The World’s Largest Cocktail Party is going to be a slobber knocker of a game this year.

The East is a three team race with UF, UK and UGA IMHO. All three have great QB play.

I’m a little disappointed. I thought the guys played pretty well. The team left at least 14 and more like 16 points on the field.
They got too cute on that first 2-point try. Two turnovers on the goal line. Cam made some questionable decisions on the last drive. Throw the ball away and stop the clock. Two yard completions in the middle of the field with the clock running…. I just shake my head. That doesn’t help.
They need to come home, regroup and run the table. Gut punch.

Why do you think that is? Do we lack speed among our defensive line and defensive ends? It seems to be a perennial problem.

Lack of edge containment. Discipline/experience issue.

In Scalley’s defense they only usually play 2 LBs & they line up inside the DE. They need a 5th nickel back because of all the passing that is the current trend. So the DE does not have any help & if he gets sucked in even a step or crashes down or is in a stunt then the edge is vulnerable—especially to a running QB who has faked inside first. Not a criticism of the D—there is always a vulnerable spot & it takes a really good running QB to exploit it. Anthony Richardson is a Cam Newton who can accurately pass & Cam won the Heisman.

Quite a few very complimentary fans last night after the game and this morning at breakfast. They were all impressed by Utah’s toughness and how well we traveled. Chatted with a guy this morning who is coming next year. Took our info and plans on coming to our tailgate.

Hey Guba, count Nancy and I in for next year’s tailgate as well.

We had a great time last night meeting all the Utes that showed up and I would be saying that even if Rising’s last pass had been complete. Pregame I always greet opposing fans with a hearty “Welcome to Gainesville!” and did so again last night at least fifty times to folks in crimson (including a fellow in front of me in the beer line that turned around and was an Ole Miss fan, that’s college football for ya).

I’m not sure what Ute fans expected down here but there seemed to me to be an odd feeling of surprise pretty much every time I said it. Basically: “Welcome to Gainesville!”, “Oh, uh, wow, thanks.”

Anyway, I got everything I wanted out of the game, a win (duh) but also a good game, compelling to the end, hard fought and full of good sportsmanship. We’ll play the Seminoles at the end of the season like we always do and trust me, that game will stand in stark opposition to this one in that regard. It always gets what the broadcast announcers call “chippy”. Maybe it’s the obvious in-state rivalry, or both team’s senior’s last game, but it never fails. Last night the weather behaved just enough; some pregame rain that stopped and cooled things off and the lightning I could see from our upper north endzone seats thankfully stayed many miles away.

I now consider myself a Utah Utes football fan. Enough so that I know better than to tackle a “U” flag carrier

We’re really looking forward to next year’s trip to your state. Two years ago we visited Colorado and made it to all four National Parks there. Well you’ve got five! We’ll spend a full two weeks there with the football game probably at the beginning or end of that time.

Let me know where you will be tailgating and we’ll see you there. All suggestions welcome, from where to sit in the stadium, to good local restaurants and breweries, hikes, whitewater trips, whatever, bring it on!

Thanks and Go Gators,

Chip

I’m more hung up on not pushing Cam over the goal line in a QB rush earlier when UF got the goal line stand. I feel like that was the turning point.

I had generally let this game go, but my thoughts are drawn back as my grandfather passed away yesterday in FL. Original plans were to go to the game, but an aunt we were going to stay at had Labor Day plans and decided not to go. I would have been able to be there as he entered the hospital on Sat. Or at least probably would have stopped since everything time I see him I consider it probably the last.

Like any close game, there really were 3-4 plays that would have won the game and we missed them. Of course, there are countless ‘what if’ plays as well that would have influenced the game as well.

Goal line fail - we score and we very likely win

  • TT tripping: maybe not a definitive score, but possible
  • Cam getting in: perhaps he was, new replay approach and running the next play fast did not help
  • TT fumbling: maybe his was in before, maybe not (or have taken the FG for 3)

Last drive - we score and we tie/win

  • Int: bad read, tried to force it in there. Maybe bad play call, maybe bad execution - either way, bad outcome. Throw away or scramble a little more and live for another down, including potential tie with FG

Of course, UF could have intercepted it on that last drive and essentially ended the game.

Game of inches. Hostile environment. They fix a few things and will be a lot better. Still some fundamental things to get better at as a team, but for the 1st game, they looked better than many years, esp. against a very quality opponent.

I was there, with a knowledgeable and extreme Florida fan. I predict that Napier will become one of the SEC giants and that Richardson will be a big star. I think Florida will be a force in the SEC this season. Florida showed tremendous character in this game, we have to admit, and it has a lot more raw talent than Utah. More ESPN 300 recruits in any one year than Utah has its entire history, by far. And that venue was a good place to bring that out. Napier is my favorite kind of hire, having succeeded as a head coach spectacularly at a lower level. Like Urban. Florida fans are very excited for him. That and Utah being so highly ranked (I assume FL has played mostly patsies in its past first games) is the reason for the record-setting crowd for first games.

Anyway, for Utes, it’s now definitely Go Gators! this season from now on. I’m usually an optimist.

(What a bunch of ■■■■ for brains there are on the Ute facebook pages. Lowest common denominator. It really makes me appreciate this place.)

Ive heard some really good thing about Napier and the plan he had and immediate changes he made to the program, facilities, culture. Wish we had beat him, but he seems like a good dude that will bring success with the right institutional support.

Another what-if play was on defense when they had 4th and 2. Contain Richardson and we can almost run the clock out.
