The kids could decommit and find another opportunity. That said, their next opportunity might be Wyoming or CSU. More likely, at this point in the process, the next opportunity would be an FCS or JUCO program.
Urban didn’t like the team he inherited at Utah, but figured out how to win with it (for better or worse). It’s how most good coaches do it. I will say Colorado had the right coach in Sanford, but dumped him for Sanders. Don’t be shocked if Deion takes “sucking” to a whole new level.
I agree with your sentiment here, although the only way we’ll know now is it wait and see where he end’s up next and how he does.
I have a couple of close friends (both former colleagues who live in Utah) who are CU alums and follow the program religiously. They were more excited about Sanford than any of the last several coaches although they both thought it would be a slow steady path back to respectability. One thought he had the potential to become CUs Whittingham.
Both are excited about Deion, although they are resigned to losing him quickly if he’s successful and being right back to looking for the next coach. One is optimistic that Deion will leave the program better, the other is afraid they will start over again when he leaves.
They both grew up in Colorado and graduated from CU in the 90’s. For years, during the late 90’s, and 2000’s, they talked to me about how Utah was “a nice little program”, but could not hang with the likes of CU or it’s conference. When we joined the PAC with them, each predicted Utah would almost never beat CU, and smiled condescending at me when they unexpectedly beat us in our first year in the PAC. They mostly have nothing but praise and admiration for Utah since and have completely lost their previous attitude.
It’s been a long time since CU Football was relevant - I’m sure they both feel a lot like Ute fans felt for most of the 70s and 80s.
I would personally like nothing more than seeing CU improve to the point where they were in the upper half of the conference every year and the so-called rivalry game became meaningful.
They are both very happy to take my tickets if I can’t attend a game at Rice-Eccles
I am definitely behind the Sanders hire; and, I think, media/people over-blown about what he said to the players in that meeting. That said, I wouldn’t trust an AD and/or coaches who don’t have a good track record (integrity).
I don’t know about others, but I formed my opinion about what Sanders said (i.e. I found it distasteful) after watching the full video of exactly what he said to them. Which was (paraphrased) “most of you should just pack your bags, I’m bringing in my own dudes”.
Was there something else we were supposed to take from that?
Well, I can see your angle. My take is of two elements: (1) those of you aren’t good enough, leave, and (2) if you want to stay, you need to be good enough. A lot of new coaches bring in their own players, that shouldn’t be anything new. Now, should he have done that on a 1-v-1 basis? Perhaps. Prime is not exactly known for his eloquent delivery or personality.
Now, I have no idea whether he’d spoken to any of the existing players prior or really analyzed them – not a clue. Is he giving some, or all, of them a chance? Don’t know. That said, I would rather someone tell me to “leave” if I’m not good enough, or not a good fit, in his mind – don’t leave me hanging or play games and limit my other potential opportunities.
Sanders should be able to bring in whomever he likes player wise.
The existing players should, even if cut from the team, have the option of finishing their education on scholarship without that affecting the football program’s scholarship allocation. Also, the players should be able to transfer if they wish.
It won’t take long for the Riley hire to implode in LA. Trojanfan will lose his mind when they never do any better than “also ran” in the B1G. I won’t be shocked to see SC miss out on another conference championship this season. Defense wins championships, and U$C has the “No Defense” defense.
Coaching a team that will be an “also-also ran,” Chip 2.0 is going to be on borrowed time, too.
And they will get quite pissy about their former rivals in the PAC getting a berth in the playoffs. But hey, maybe they’ll figure out a way to finish ahead of Ohio St, Michigan, and Penn St every year.
Seems like a player Deion needed to keep. His numbers are very good - good enough that keeping him around would’ve benefited the team. Then again, Sanders basically fired the whole team with his welcoming speech. FWIW I think we got a great player because Deion played the douche card.
Sanders is a Punk ! Always has been, always will be ! I’ve never been one to advocate running up the score, but I wouldn’t cry if the Utes put a 61-7 beat down on the Buffs
He’s definitely someone who’s gotten his way ever since he became a top prospect in HS. He is privileged to skip the process most have to take to get a P5 gig. I think it’s hard for me to lay his behavior just at his feet. Too many people have enabled him along the way.
That said, I as well want to see y’all run it up on him.
