Here is another twist. The PAC-12 guarantees scholarships for 4 years (maybe 5). So, every kid he kicks off the team (encourages to transfer) still has his scholarship.
So, Deion comes to you, tells you to hit the road. You have options:
1 - Stay. You aren’t on the team, but you still have your scholarship.
2 - Transfer.
But this screws Colorado over. Say Deion kicks a kid off the team. Colorado has to pay for that scholarship. Then Deion brings in a new kid. Now Colorado is paying 2 scholarships for one player. And let’s say that kid leaves after one year and you bring in another. That is now potentially three scholarships for one player. The money can add up fast.
Now, this assumes the kid doesn’t enter the portal, then the scholarship can be cancelled, but if you are buried on the depth chart and burned out and like living in Colorado, I could see a few kids daring Deion to kick them off the team so they can finish their degree for free.
I’m late to this party of all the Deion to CU talk. But I have some thoughts. First, this is huge for the conference. More people are going to pay attention to the PAC-12 right away. Second, this is a man who gets results. I have no doubt that CU will improve vastly very quickly. Third, I would be shocked if he stayed at CU long. I expect him to possibly have CU in a bowl game in year 1 and then maybe have nine wins in year two. Then, by year three, he’ll be off to the SEC or ACC.
Seems like this remains to be seen. There’s lots of coaches who had success at smaller schools who didn’t replicate it on a larger stage. He’s been a coach for 2 years at a small school in a unique circumstance.
I’m not saying he won’t have success at CU. I’m just saying I don’t think it’s a given, by any stretch.
I think 77’s thought process isn’t wrong. I think the first year will be more of a struggle. That TCU opening game will say quite a bit. Not thinking he will win the conference though. The problem is you are def paying for the here and now at CU. Like Jackson State once he leaves I’m not sure you can keep it going.
I don’t think he can turn Colorad9 in one year, the way Riley turned around Southern Cal. But he certainly should be able to make them better, and add some national cachet to the league.
Has anyone here actually seen his JSU teams play? Don’t imagine it’s easy to find a game. Like, how good is his kid at QB? How about that 5-star DB who is coming? Probably hard to tell given the competition. One thing’s for sure, people across the country will pay attention to CU like they haven’t since Kordell Stewart and Rashaan Salaam were there.
I was thinking the same thing, I haven’t seen his teams play so it’s hard to make judgements. Were the Xs and Os great, or did he overwhelm other teams with superior talent? Or a combination of both?
It was the same for me trying to evaluate Lincoln Riley when he came to USC. I learned by watching them play this year that a large portion of their success on offense wasn’t due to brilliant game planning, but having a talented QB that produced big plays while scrambling.
Yup. They had more games that people could find nationwide because they weren’t on the Pac 12 Network. BET, ESPNUand ESPNNews carried them. They even had College Gameday visit. Last game was on ESPN 2
Goooooood. Hopefully he takes Bill O’Brien as well. I was more worried he would offer Travaris Robinson the DC job. I hope Alabama can retain Robinson. The thing about NIL, Transfers and the new landscape is each season there will be a significant turnover to top end and bottom end teams. We’ve lost coaches for years though.
More of me joking. Alabama fans when they see a coaching opening fill the replies on Twitter with BOB suggestions. I am not sure there is a more hated assistant in CNS time than BOB.
The Athletic reported today that CU’s AD called recruits after Dorrell was fired and asked them to remain committed and promised their scholarship offers would be honored.
Those recruits now say they can’t get in touch with CU or haven’t heard a thing from them.
