Bring on Phil Knight U.! (fka the Oregon Ducks)

Carlin was a national treasure.

We used to listen to him when I was a teenager, my friend’s dad had Carlin albums.
I remember his parents arguing about letting us listen to them.

If they ever join the Navy they’ll be prepared!!! OK, go listen to Carlin if you want, guys.”

This bit brings back great memories as George Carlin was such an integral part of my intellectual development as a teenager.

I had tickets to see him in 2007 and ended up not being able to go. Still one of the greatest regrets of my life.

Thanks everyone for all the Carlin references  I’ve been on YouTube for the last hour watch several bits of his. Loved and really miss hearing that guy.

We have too much beach in Magna right now, so more rain and snow would be greatly appreciated.

Snip from The Athletic, as reprinted in the Tribune:

The Utes are 6-1 and ranked 13th in the latest AP poll. All of this despite the fact their starting quarterback Cam Rising and arguably their best offensive weapon, tight end Brant Kuithe, haven’t taken a snap and will not play this season.

There are injuries elsewhere, too. Ultra-talented linebacker Lander Barton is now out for the season after he suffered an injury against USC this past weekend. That’s a big blow for the defense, but true to form, the Utes have just rolled with the punches this season. There were also injuries at running back, leading to safety Sione Vaki getting some snaps at the position.

He rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns against Cal. This past weekend, he rushed for 68 yards and caught five passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns in a thrilling 34-32 win over USC.

Every time his team’s back is seemingly against the wall, Whittingham continues to find a way. The Utes, who have one league loss (Week 5 against Oregon State), will certainly be up against it this week when eighth-ranked Oregon visits Salt Lake City. Their bid for a three-peat rests heavily on what happens this weekend.

Morales does a good job covering not just USC but the entire PAC-12. Since The Athletic released most of their beat writers, he now covers the whole PAC-12 also in that weekly column (as well as his columns specific to USC).

I hope Scalley comes out blitzing the first few plays. I would guess Oregon will try to establish the run, so hopefully we can put pressure on Nix and the RB and get TFL or sack if they play action it. Then if it’s 3rd and long, fake the blitz and fall back into the gaps and pick-six Nix. That hopefully will rattle him and cause more mistakes and/or potential for sacks as well as false starts.

It’s going to be a fine line of taking risks and getting burned. Oregon took a few too many risks against UW (red zone 4th downs) - I hope they continue to take the risks and fail at them.

Nice article on Vaki (warning, DN): ‘An absolute unbelievable human being’: What makes Utes’ two-way star so special - Deseret News

After the game, one of my sons said he remembered Riley (?) interviewing a sports medicine MD or PT who does work for players from Utah & TDS, maybe some Jazz players, too. I think this was in 2021, he was talking about Covey’s recovery from ACL surgery, testing and developing strength, etc.

(Paraphrase) “But this returned missionary, this Vaki kid. He’s on a completely different level”.

USC’s defense is not very good, but they have some really nice athletes. Vaki jumped off the screen. Benching 400 with a 39" vertical - that translates into unexpected speed and that stop & reverse move on his second TD. You just can’t teach that.

Tough game, although I do think it’s winnable. If we can make Nix uncomfortable and win the turnover battle, I like our chances. Also, the key here is to keep the game low scoring, which it probably will be. We only gave up 20 last season.

Our defense is going to need to be very physical and fundamentally sound to affect Oregon’s offense.

Their RB’s run angry and if we are going to stop them, we can’t miss tackles. We also need to gang tackle them. Too many teams have not reacted quick enough to the first defender’s contact, and those two RB’s then rattle off more yards - sometimes in a big hurry.

Hopefully the defense makes “Bad Bo” show up. Bo is having a better season this year than last year - and that one didn’t suck. He, like Williams, knows how to throw open a receiver. That said hurrying him through his progressions, knocking him down, and sacking him can slow or stop their production. A couple of turnovers wouldn’t suck either.

Their defense is solid and fast. This means the offensive line has to make sure they are getting locked in on the rushing defenders in the pass game or Bryson will be running for his life. They need to go into road grader mode on run plays to give JaQuinden and Sione the run gap they need to move the chains and eat the clock. The receivers need to catch the ball. Drops on catchable passes are a killer.

Yes, we are overachieving right now. I hope the trend continues this Saturday with a win.

GO UTES!!!

My guess is the same as last week against Southern Cal. But we won anyway, so what do I know?

Hey all, Greginslc made me think about what happened to Glover. He didn’t play at USC, right? Also, in the Kamrani article I posted in another thread, he wasn’t mentioned at all. Is he gone, or what?
