Was pulling for England and I hoped the English would ‘reset’ after the hydration break and not just sit back ‘playing not to lose’ letting Argentina relentlessly attack but they just continued that course and I knew a comeback was certain.
Spain versus Argentina is an intriguing matchup between a formidable defense (1 goal allowed in 7 matches) and strong offense (scored at least twice every single contest).

Another utterly insane stat I saw this morning.
For the whole tournament (including their group round against soccer powerhouses Algeria, Austria, and Jordan), Argentina’s goal differential for the first 70 minutes was +1.
For the last 20’ + stoppage/extra time, it’s +11.

I really don’t have a dog in this fight other than I’ve found I just don’t like Argentina or their fans. OK, that’s not really true. Yamal and his braces got me. And they’re pretty, pretty, pretty good.

The Spaniards (and Brazilians) I work with outnumber the Argentinians, so I’m going with Spain.
Interestingly, my Brazillian coworkers really wanted to know who I want in the consolation match on Saturday between England and France.
It took me a second to figure out what they were talking about. World Cup still has that, like we used to in basketball tournaments, like the Final Four.

The third-place match seems incredibly irrelevant and anticlimactic. Both teams have to feel deflated and largely unmotivated. The NCAA Tournament did away with the third-place game in the early 80s, for good reason.

This is one thing I’ve noticed during this World Cup run - my coworkers from all over the world are still plugged in, many even for the consolation match, especially the Brazilians.
Sure, if Brazil were in the finals it would be much more intense, but that they ask me who I’m rooting for in this match indicates it really is a world game.
In the WC you see so many players on opposite sides / countries who are teammates in their pro leagues interacting after games. I tried to point out Bad Bunny was kind of international? (That got a good laugh.)

the consolation match is not irrelevant for me; I was cheering for both England and France in the Semis, and am discouraged at the outcomes. I’ll be very interested in seeing the matchup that I had hoped to be the final.
I can understand, however, that there may be some players, coaches and perhaps lots of fans that will not have their hearts in it.

I would think there is a national rivalry between England and France, like the US and Canada in hockey. I think I’ll take a peek in.
