World Cup

That ended up a butt-whuppin. Canada looked good in the first half, but had zero offensive threat.

Kids have been begging to see the new Minions movie (ugh) so I’ll miss most of France/Paraguay. Not I expect that’ll be very competitive.

You are a better person than I am. I couldn’t possibly stomach watching that movie.

I was worried about the match. Morocco gave me the impression they had more zip while watching previous matches. Sadly, I was right (for once).

I’ve watched more Futbol this summer than I ever remember. Lots of gamesmanship & playing the referees, of course.

Basketball has a flopping problem, but the way these players drop like a sack of potatoes anytime someone is nearby makes me giggle. We’ve had a few running backs who’ve struggled with yards after contact in the other football, but can you imagine the stats if a RB had Futbol like falling down skills?

217 carries for 7.3 yards for the ‘26 season

It was somehow worse than I expected, and even the kids thought it was boring. Turns out the minions are mildly amusing in very small doses only. Who knew?

Was very surprised to come out and see France/Paraguay tied at 0.

That is my issue as well. I don’t get it. Are they taught to do that? Or is it like American football, where whenever someone scores a TD, they act like an idiot because someone else did it too.

Some of it is trying to get the ref to call a foul. Some of it is tactical, just trying to get your team a minute or two of rest. And some of it is them just being pansies, honestly.

I’m mostly irritated with the keepers. When I played, keepers were the tougher players that would never, ever dive. But now they writhe around if someone even looks at them wrong.

I hear all of you about the flopping but, the only protection these guys wear are shin guards, breathable uniforms and their boots. These are world class athletes running at top speed, so I’d say the collisions have got to hurt quite a bit. Yes, laying there to take a breather makes total sense. We just saw a run between France and Paraguay and France ended up with the ball. The Paraguay player laid on the ground, out of gas, as the play moved on.

Oh, it does very often hurt.

But not “I’ll around on the ground like I’ve been shot” hurt.

Also, the flopping at end of this game is getting completely ridiculous.

I’m just glad they don’t use that (fake) magic spray can, anymore. That might have been the UK league.

I was starting to think we’d see commercials like “I had my lower leg severed in a car crash, but thanks to the Ultimedic in a can, I ran a marathon 2 weeks later”.

Great insight, BTW. I do have a new appreciation for Futbol.

The Paraguayan goalkeeper had a game for the ages. The rest of their team was outmatched, outplayed and outclassed from start to finish.

As a comparison, Kylian Mbappe is 5’11”, 165 lbs, so like a slightly thinner CB in Football. Impressive athlete. They all are.

I’m truly shocked, tbh.

Very glad, as it think it’ll help to even the odds, but shocked

When I first saw the headline, I thought it was something from The Onion, or something similar. I thought, too soon guys.

Will wonders never cease?!?

Edited to add the below article. Hmmmmm

If I were on the FIFA board, I would be calling an emergency meeting for two items…

  1. To remove the President of the Board. The corruption has finally reached the point that he has to go.
  2. To reimpose the one game suspension of Balogun. As much as I believe the red card was utter BS, the rules are the rules. The only other choice would be to grant Belgium a walkover by tossing the host nation out of the tournament.
