I appreciate this information. My knowledge of Jews and Utah comes from the mid-70s prior to the existence of the internet. I was in a production of Fiddler on the Roof at my high school, and the director was a Jewish teacher, and she told me the story. Yes, a Jewish teacher directed Fiddler on the Roof, how iconic. Or ironic. Not sure which.

I remember the first time I saw that movie, I was about 12. My mom was always trying to get us kids exposed to culture and she loved musicals. (In my case, to say it was a lost cause would be an understatement for the ages.)

Anyway, when the Matchmaker, Matchmaker song came on, my 12 year old mind was so uncultured - and demented - I thought this young lady was seeking a big lighter or a torch… like maybe she was a pyromaniac! BONUS! And, she had boobs, too!

“This movie may be more interesting than I thought!”

I perked right up and was rolling along with this idea, excited to see how things unfolded… until I decided to clarify the meaning of the song with my mom.

So disappointing… then it became just another attempt at acculturation by coercion.

My brother was in a production of Fiddler in HS. It was the first time the musical had been done at Orem High. At that time their new drama teacher, Neil Barth, wanted to try something different. He ended up playing Tevye. Having the teacher perform with the students was a first at the school. My mom dragged me and my brothers to the HS to see it. It was actually pretty well done (at least the Daily Herald thought so). Mom was happy to see my brother perform. It was his first, and last, performance. He moved over to debate for his last two year in HS; and we never had to go to another play.

That is funny! As are way too many similar memories I can think of from my own 12 year old, male experience!

Yeah, The Sound Of Music comes to mind. Lots of Von Trapp distraction… Vavoom!
