Utes vs. Thunderbirds

Please tell me where I said BYU would be making the Elite 8 this year. I will wait…

That statement implies you think it’s a possibility. You are the one who used ‘byu’ & ‘Elite 8’ in the same sentence. Maybe you didn’t mean this season but you didn’t clarify that. I think most people reading that would believe you imply byu could make the Elite 8 this year.

I stand by my statement that it is more likely byu does not make the tournament this year. I don’t see how that indicates I don’t know anything about college basketball.

Sure, anything is possible, but BYU can lose quite a few games in the Big 12, just with the strength of the conference and still get in. I think that being “surprised” if BYU actually made the tournament would be considered silly statement by college basketball experts, and my guess is “UteBrave” would not make this statement about any other team in the Net Rankings top 10 and is just doing so because he doesn’t like BYU. For example, the current bracketology odds I found give BYU a 99% chance of making the tournament. You can google " NCAA Tournament Bracketology 2024" if you want to see this.

Anything is a possiblity. Utah could make the Elite 8. That doesn’t mean I think BYU will be making the Elite 8, it means what I said, that I would be ecstatic if BYU could make the elite 8. Glad we could clear that up.

Also, If you can’t understand why being “surprised” if the current #1 team in the NCAA rankings for getting in the tournament actually got in the tournament is silly, then I can’t help you. BTW, I would be happy to get an easy dinner from you on this if you wanted, although my guess is that we don’t live close enough to each other to make that feasible.

Colorado St and Princeton are also in the top 10 of the NET right now. My guess is that those fanbases are happy with their hot start but realize the rankings are skewed this early in the year.

Would you be surprised if both of these teams made the tournament? I understand it is possible that either one might not make it, but I think it is probable they both will. If UteBrave had said it was possible that BYU might not make the tournament I wouldn’t have said anything. But, when he said he would be surprised if BYU made the tournament, I had to call that out.

Let’s do this. You come back in March when the NCAA bracket comes out.

Who knows, were 8 games into the season. Maybe they will, maybe they wont. But I suspect there not bragging about there NET ranking on their rivals message board.

BYU fans are so desperate to beat Utah at anything these days.

BYU may or may not make the tournament (based on their hot start and margin of victory, I would say they probably do, but Big 12 play will be unlike anything anyone in that program has ever seen), but I would be completely stunned if they reach the Sweet 16, let alone the Elite 8.

Edit: Sounds like a plan. You can ignore my original snarky response…

I mostly agree with you (although I may be more hopeful about the sweet 16). BTW, if Carlsen is healthy the rest of the year, I think it is more likely than not that Utah makes the tournament also.

And you’re hanging out on your rival’s board for what reason?

I was there for that game. I still laugh about that half time fiasco and how the crowd turned so brutal against UCLA. one of my favorite memories.

I was at that game as well. At the conclusion of the Blue Demon’s upset of UCLA, long time DePaul head coach Ray Meyer, I believe unaware of the halftime faux pax by UCLA, loudly proclaimed on the public address system; You are the greatest basketball fans I have ever witnessed!, or something to that effect.

Yup, and DePaul had the BYU pep band come to the U the next week to support them in the final.

Lost in all the halftime cluster that day was how amazing DePaul did while only having six guys in the rotation. Of course, when one of those is a freshman named Mark Aguirre it helps a lot.
