Sun or Independence, or LA Gronk Bowl? I thought Vegas was best bowl after Alamo in the ‘pecking order’ (which there isn’t really one after NY6 and presumably Alamo), but Holiday and Sun payout is higher than Vegas. For proximity though, Vegas is the best (although Dec 23).
Would Barnes be back if he does decide to enter the portal? It opens Dec 4 for a month although a player can wait.
If you go to the portal you’re no longer in the squad. You can withdraw or come back obviously (see Micah Bernard and Luke Bottari, for example), but if your in it you aren’t playing.
The Gronk Bowl, Holiday Bowl, or Vegas Bowl would be awesome. The Bowl in San Antonio wouldn’t be too bad. The Juarez Donkey Bowl in El Paso would suck.
Independence and Gronk aren’t great destinations IMO because (among other reasons) they happen in early/mid December and only allow teams a fraction of the extra practices they’d otherwise get. Whitt has often said those practices are the best part of going bowling… it’s sort of like a mini spring camp for the program.
There’s a lot of horse-trading behind the scenes on bowl selection, and historically they’ve rarely mirrored the order of finish in the selection order - though they do stick to the tiers, and it’s hard to imagine the Utes getting Holiday or Vegas if they lose today.
I believe payouts are shared equally among the league, so payout isn’t really a factor.
Good points. The payout aspect - more just an indication of ‘quality’ or tiering. But, yes, lots of behind the scenes jockeying for each bowl to put in their preferences, set up desirable match-ups, and discussion with the conference (but probably mostly ESPN).
Re: transfer portal - yep, so if Barnes is planning on playing in a bowl game, he’ll have to wait to enter. Otherwise, Bottari might be the starter there too with Rising/Rose medical RS, NJ/Barnes portal …
Oregon and UW will be CFP/NY6, Arizona likely Alamo, then after that, everyone is bunched enough it’ll just come down to the picks - assuming 8-4: Oregon St., Utah, UCLA; 7-5 USC for Holiday, Vegas, Sun, Independence, LA (which we might not even be able to fill).
