Utah vs. Idaho football thread

We only had one penalty. That was nice to see.

Can anyone explain why there wasn’t PI called on those two plays? Sure looked like PI to me.

I came away more optimistic about the offense that I expected to be. Seems like we have some real weapons and the playcalling seemed very much in line from what we saw last year.

I also came away more pessimistic about the defense than I expected to be. We didn’t get much pressure, allowed long sustained drives against vastly inferior competition, and often seemed out of place and a step slow. Doesn’t matter against Idaho, but it will matter against better teams.

I was at that 1993 game where nothing Utah’s offense did worked except when Jamal had the ball and I kept on yelling give the ball to Jamal. Believe that was our last loss to a lower division team.

It was. And while it was an embarrassing loss, that was a really good Idaho team. They had multiple blowout wins and made it all the way to FCS playoff semis. Within a couple years, of course, they moved back up to FBS where they spent the next 20+ years.

The Idaho coach Smith (first name?) went from Idaho to Utah State a bit later (and beat the Utes twice) then moved on to Louisville for a while.

Yep Alex Smith’s uncle. He also was the HC at Michigan State for a while.

I remember in some interview or something, Alex joking about how he only had two college offers coming out of HS - but one was from Louisville where his uncle was the coach, so it “didn’t really count”.

We won, lots of players got reps, no major injuries happened. It was what we needed a game 1 body bag game to be. That said…

Props to the Vandals for playing their hearts out. They will have a great season in the Big Sky.

Love that we are still doing the Moment of Loudness. Also love the new narration.

Really well done. Originally, it was all Whitt. Morgan has opened it up to a LOT of co-narrators.

To be clear, I’m not picking on KW, it’s a great tradition born from tragedy, and he led us through it.

But the way it has evolved is symbolic of Morgan’s different leadership style.
