Utah vs. Idaho football thread

I’ve visited the University of Idaho a few times. Wonderful campus in a charming college town that borders on another great college town.

Idaho was one of the original Pac schools alongside Washington, Wazzu, Oregon, Cal, USC et al. Their football program has a long winding past, and they most recently moved from FBS to FCS in 2019. Utah holds a slight all-time series edge 14-12-2.

I didn’t see Idaho’s game last week, but it sounds like their D is suspect. Hopefully the Utes will get a big lead early, rest their starters and come away with zero injuries. I’m going Utah 48, Idaho 10 in this one.

Thank you for highlighting our shared history. The history of college football is what drives me to follow the sport.

Idaho got a little curb-stomped to open the season. I would figure this one to be a body bag game tonight. Hopefully the team will have a nice tune up to get ready for Arkansas next week.

I don’t think I’d call losing on the last play of the game getting “curb stomped”.

Eager to get the Scalley era underway.

Cal Poly rolled up more than 500 yards on 'em, and most of Idaho’s points came in the 4th quarter. I didn’t see the game but I’m guessing it felt like they were out of it most of the way.

I am going the RockerUte way, 99-0.

We probably won’t learn much from the outcome of this game, but all I care about at this point is that Utah football is back!

GO UTES!

Kibbie Domers come to town! Yes, Idaho scored most of their points in the 4th, but so did Cal Poly. Was 21-16 going into 4th. But, they are both FCS. Spread is 37.5 and don’t think the Utah covers just because we’ll put in the 2nds early to get reps and take the foot off the gas and save it for Arkansas.

Ficklin plays 1.5 quarters. OL gets some reps together. D goes to town with 10 sacks.

Last time these two teams played (1993), Utah inexplicably lost 28-17, just two weeks after blowing out Kansas on the road, 41-16. 1993 was a bizarre season.

This game shouldn’t be close. I suspect the first quarter and a half might be a bit ragged, but things should pick up from there. The last 20 minutes or so of game time should be second- and third-stringers getting some action.

Does Crazy George (a professional cheerleader who locally was paid to yell and cheer and bang a drum at Salt Lake Sting soccer games in the early 90s and reportedly still appears at San Jose Earthquakes games) still appear at Idaho home games? (Saw him when viewing a televised Weber State game being played there)

There was a professional volleyball team in Salt Lake in the late 70’s called the Stingers. Coed league. Was fun to go to the games at the old Salt Palace.

I went to one of the volleyball games back then. Was indeed innovative that it was coed.

Idaho was actually favored last week, but the game was at San Luis Obispo… so I don’t think much insight can be found from that game except Idaho will be motivated and with a week of experience.

Utes will win, but the Vandals have the advantage of being a week ahead in development.

That 1993 game still gives me acid reflux. I loved Coach Mac but he would get outcoached two games every year and that game Alex’s uncle, John L outcoached Mac. I think Jamal Anderson was our RB and he was heavier than all of Idaho’s DL but he still hardly had any carries.

Anyway. I don’t see Scalley being outcoached here. 38-10

Not going to lie, if the final is 30-17, I’ll be quite disappointed and pretty worried about the season.

Yeah, Jamal averaged 8 yards a carry in that game, but only had 13 carries. Utah was actually down 28-9 midway through the fourth before tacking on a late score and 2-point conversion. Crazy to think this same 1993 team would end up finishing fourth in the national in total yards per game, would beat BYU in Provo for the first time in 22 years, and would give USC a decent game (after a horrible start) in the Freedom Bowl. Oh, and Idaho’s QB that day was Doug Nussmeier, who has had some good coordinator jobs in college and the pros.

Not sure I’d even be confident about the season if it were 99-2. Games against FCS usually don’t tell you much.
