I find myself listening to old school thrash metal these days. Caught me off guard.
Gotta love some Sam Cooke
Slightly before my time, so i don’t know much about his him or his music, but I’ve been occasionally hearing this classic (and loving it) since I was a small child:
Have you ever read about the circumstances surrounding this death? Very interesting. He has become one of my favorites recently. That voice…
No, I had not. But I have now… Bizarre… Thanks for mentioning it.
The story I just read mentioned Etta James and her involvement in the inquiry. She is another from that era that created some fabulous music. Again, she was a bit before my time, but I’ve since heard many of her songs and enjoyed them for years. Classics, most people know her for “Something’s Got A Hold On Me”, but another great one is:
“At Last” might be her biggest hit and best song.
Of course, how could I forget “At Last”.
It’s funny, I grew up listening to the music of the late 60’s, and the 70’s, and this sort of stuff seemed very old fashioned and not very appealing to me at that time. I came to hear it and enjoy it more later in life. The fifties and early 60’s produced an enormous amount of great music, that I’m glad I discovered.
How about this GREAT tune:
It made a funny appearance with John Candy in “Plains, Trains, and Automobiles”.
Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Country Blues. Finger picking style, from the 30’s and 40’s, mostly southern black musicians who were more like minstrels singing and accompanying themselves on guitar. I bought a nice acoustic guitar a few of years ago and finally have some time to play it and am really enjoying relearning stuff like this that I have not played for may years. It’s certainly not very well know anymore and not everyone’s cup of tea,. but GREAT music to my way of thinking.
I love the famous Oberlin college recording of him. I’ll post later.
Here’s an album for you… Live At Oberlin College Mississippi John Hurt
Thanks, Great album! I have a vinyl copy that I purchased in about 73, but it’s completely worn out from playing it repeatedly at 16, slowing it down, so I could figure out what he was playing. Nobody does that sort of thing anymore of course, as there is someone now who has published a video on youtube showing exactly how to play virtually anything.
My favorite song on that album is Coffee Blues - I wonder if Maxwell house ever paid him for all the otherwise free publicity they got from him - he had been doing that schtick for decades.
I wonder if it really was “Maxwell House” in the cup…
I’m about to go through an Otis Redding phase. I can feel it.
Plenty of classics there, enjoy… I probably will be now also
I dance just like Gahan to this one.
Better than that
Felt like some swing, and thinking about a silly old song my father used to play on the phonograph when I was very young, I stumbled upon this much newer version, with a singer I had never heard; fabulous arrangement, but what a singer. Her trumpet-like trills to end the piece are spectacular.
Been listening to her stuff for the last 90 minutes - what a voice!
Her version of Clifford Brown’s Joy Spring (one of my favorite tunes) is very nice.
She does several interesting and some very unusual (Sunshine Superman) covers of 60’s tunes.
Five Finger Death Punch is Nickelback for kids. That “cover” of the Kenny Wayne Shepard song includes Kenny Wayne Shepard. They can’t even do a cover without using the original singer of the song? GTFO.
