The official "What are you listening to right now?" thread

I saw them in 2011. One of the best shows I have ever been to.

I just recently found them on Little Steven’s Underground Garage on XM. Really like them. I bet they would be good live.

I decided to give these guys a shot after hearing them mentioned in this thread. I’ve head about them for the last two decades and they didn’t seem like my jam.

They aren’t.

But I give them credit for putting on a show. Wow! Those Germans know how to do metal!

As far as German music goes, I’m more into stuff like this:

Here’s another band that I’ve been listening to quite a bit over the last 4 or 5 years. I prefer their own original songs to their covers, but they have some good covers.

I actually met these guys. They were d-bags. Kind of a funny story though.

Can’t leave us hangin’ with the quip about a funny story.

I’ve met several celebrities that have been d-bags; Lance Armstrong being the biggest, followed by followed by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. The coolest was Robin Williams. Got to do a charity ride with Robin Williams in Austin, the Ride for the Roses, LA was obviously involved too. But Robin was a really good rider, for a weekend rider. 2 things I remember about him on that ride. One, he was funny, made it hard to breathe I was laughing so hard. Therefore it became hard to ride well. Part of what made it memorable, and I still refer to the club I was in by that name was the name of the club. The club was, is Violet Crown. Part of the history of Austin was involved with the name. But Robin without missing a beat called us the Violent Clowns. It’s stuck with me ever since. I can’t look at their kit without that memory. The other part that I remember abour Robin, he was a hairy assed bugger. To shave his legs, or any part of his body he would’ve had to do some serious manscaping first.

Great memory of Robin.

Not nearly as interesting as your story, but I ran into two guys outside the Starbucks at the Gateway Mall over 10 years ago. They were on the phone and appeared to be doing a radio show. I asked them a few questions about what they were doing and they identified themselves as “Five Finger Death Punch”. They weren’t impressed when I said I didn’t know who they were, to say the least. They’re not my jam, but I know a lot of people like them.

An all-time favorite.

This is the most unsurprising thing ever, I’ve heard nothing but bad things about these dudes. Among actual metalheads, FFDP are mostly seen as a joke. They’re a gimmick band who makes terrible radio metal for tweens (IMHO, of course).

Here’s my goofiest celebrity musician story. My first “real” concert was Anthrax and Public Enemy at the Air Force Academy when I was 16 (1990). My friend’s dad was Commandant of Cadets at the time (Dean of Students, basically) and hooked us up with backstage passes. We wound up hanging out with Anthrax for about an hour before the show. While I was completely starstruck, the Anthrax guys were all incredibly gracious, making awkward small talk with these three dorky kids who had somehow wandered into their dressing room. They apparently thought we were actually Cadets at the Academy, because they kept asking us over and over again, “Now, which one of you flies the helicopters?” I think Scott Ian finally just felt bad for us and offered us all beers. That was about the time the huge security guard slapped us on the shoulder and said “OK, time to go”.

I actually ran into Joey (singer) and Scott (guitar) on a heavy metal cruise 20+ years later and told them that story. Joey thought it was hilarious, and said he was mostly surprised that they didn’t try to get us drunk and/or stoned.

We briefly met Chuck D and Flavor Flav from PE that day as well. Chuck was super cool, Flav was as completely insane as you would expect. it wasn’t an act with that dude…he was literally nuts.

Back to the topic at hand, I’m jamming some old school death metal this morning.

I am really liking this fun collaboration by one of my favorite bands.

I worked for Ticketbastards for a bunch of years and had a number of opportunities to interact with bands/musicians and their management teams. It was a mixed bag of outright douche barges like Van Halen and really cool people like BNL or Rod Stewart. I also volunteered with the Edmonton Folk Music Festival for a few years. That was a very cool experience. I had a chance to chat with Solomon Burke, his brother and several members of the band for about 20-30 mins while they waited for their shuttle back to the hotel from the festival site. He was a giant of a man in more ways than one and very humble and personable.

A few years ago a lot of Robin’s bikes were auctioned off for a charity. He had some amazing bikes. I wish I could have bought one.

We saw Robin Williams on Alpe d’Huez in the 2006 TDF. He was walking around with a big white floppy hat, perhaps trying to hide in the crowd, but cracking jokes with everyone, loudly enough that everyone knew who he was.
He was always one of my favorite comedians, and someone who did a lot for others.
Parkinson’s, and particularly Lewy body dementia, from which he suffered, is a horrible disease - my wife’s mother is suffering from this now and it is very difficult to watch.

He was known for being a huge cycling fan. Sad that disease brought him down so young.

Anyone into Shoegaze?

Any Jam band fans should check out Soulive with John Scofield and Marcus King doing "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed "

Had to check this out as the original has been one of my favorites for decades. Loved it, thanks for the recommendation. (Guess that makes me a Jam band fan .)

That tune is on my top ten desert island tunes ! If you haven’t heard the Allman Brothers acoustic version you need to !
