Hadn’t heard this cover in a long time.
Can never see this too much.
This thread seems to be the most appropriate place for this link. I originally found this on quo.eldiario.es. If you want to read the Spanish version feel free to go there.
Resonancia neuronal: por qué la música que escuchas te cambia el cerebro - Quo (Spanish)
I think the article from El Diario is better, it has more information. Translate as needed.
I found the original info that came from the University of Connecticut.
Anyway, the gist is that music and maybe lights create a resonance within the brain, and ultimately helping your memory. I’m sure that there is a ton a data somewhere, and more scientific papers elsewhere to back this up, but I this would be good to share with all of us music lovers, regardless of genre.
There’s been two releases in the past two weeks from longtime extreme metal stalwarts that have absolutely no right being as good as they are.
Venom, “Into Oblivion”. Venom has been around for nearly 5 decades now. Although they never got the commercial success of Sabbath, they are every bit as influential. Every metal band today can draw a line back to Venom. This new album shows that even in his mid-60’s, Chronos absolutely still has the fury, the snarl, and the talent to still remain at the top of the metal heap.
At the Gates, “The Ghost of a Future Dead”. I’ll admit this one was a hard listen after Tompa’s (lead singer) passing from cancer last fall at 52. “Slaughter of the Soul” is in my personal top 5 of all time and I couldn’t bear to see a band do a cash-in after his death. Thankfully, that ended up not being a concern at all, as this album is every bit as brutal and angry as “Slaughter”. Tompa apparently recorded all the vocals in a single day - most of them in a single take - the day before he had surgery that he knew would likely take his voice permanently. That’s metal as f*ck.
The vitriol he spews here, especially given the circumstances, is nothing short of remarkable and the songwriting brings the chops to round out a remarkable album. I should have known AtG wouldn’t go out with a whimper, and instead ensure that they tore everyone’s face off one final time. Mission accomplished here.
Also, this video makes my room dusty.
Yes, it is incredible both bands released albums this week but I have problems with both of them. First, i want sloppy Venom. I want a drummer than loses the tempo and crappy production. THAT is Venom. And I know the story about Tompa recording the vocals the day before his surgery (which IS AMAZING for sure) but he sounds like crap on the album. An amazing tribute and effort but unfortunately he makes the album borderline unlistenable to me, even with some amazing riffs and drumming.
I was playing “Black Metal” in the car and one of my kids asked “Dad, is there something wrong with the guy singing?”. Thought that was an apt summary of Venom. ![]()
I saw them once live and they were a total and complete disaster. I love their music and they’ve had an outsized influence on the genre as a whole, but they are often just a complete clusterf*ck. Which is part of their charm, I suppose.
Would totally disagree on that one. To me, he doesn’t sound any better or worse than the last couple albums. If anything, he sounded more pissed off to me. That said, I’ve heard his vocal style described once as “spitting out glass”, which certainly isn’t everyone’s cuppa.
A great tune live in England, by the man generally considered the Greatest Jazz Guitarist. It’s one of my favorite of his tunes, and at the end of 35 or so minutes of a live performance, in case you want to watch more.
Great stuff !!! Thanks for posting.
Trouble sleeping tonight… when that happens, I occasionally listen to an old album I like on Youtube, and when it ends their algorithms often pick something to follow that works. Tonight, the algorithm picked something that picked me up and had me so wide awake I’m listening (happily, but tiredly) to the whole suggested album.
This song has been running through my head non-stop for the past week. I adore this band.
Jess Allanic is an absolutely insane powerhouse of a musician and vocalist…who I’m pretty sure could also eat my soul.
May he rest in peace.
I have to say that start to finish, Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning is probably the best album of acoustic music I’ve ever heard - and that’s saying a lot. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years. I’m lucky enough to be in LA next weekend and will see the anniversary show, with the album played in its entirety, at the Hollywood Bowl.
Landlocked Blues is a beautiful song in an album of masterpieces. Been trying to find a duet performance seen online years ago - no luck. This one’s excellent though, despite the choppy, out-of-sync video.
