Cannot give this enough stars…

I had a lady friend, who was a bit older than me in about 1974-1975 who had divorced her husband and moved to the Denver area. Since I was a recent high school graduate, with a new job distributing motion picture film, but with a lot of time on my hands, and as she had been my favorite coffee shop waitress throughout high school, I helped her move, drove her car and kids over the Rockies, once she was settled, and while there discovered and saw Robben Ford play several times.

His work then was very blues oriented, but already leaning toward the growing Jazz-Blues Fusion genre. I went back a handful of times and always looked for an opportunity to hear Ford, taking friends and band mates along occasionally.

The band I was playing with at the time included a very good local SLC bassist (gone now for 20ish years) :frowning: who was good enough to get on stage with Ford in late night jam sessions (while I was not).

Denver in those days had a great local blues, Jazz, fusion environment (as did SLC, but unlike Denver, in SLC in those days, you sorta had to know where to go).

Ford is, to this day, now 50ish years on, one of the best guitarists I’ve ever heard. And remarkably, most people have never heard his name.

Edit to say - I’d kill to have ever heard him play with Miles, or to have ever even seen Miles live! What a treat.

Glad you enjoyed that. I was fortunate enogh to see Miles in 83, it was an
" In the round" stage so he couldn’t keep his back to the audience :rofl:Also fortunate enough to see Robben twice. He has a brand new album out.

Thanks I’ll order the album. Super jealous that you saw Miles in person!

He had Mike Stern and John Scofield on guitar. Even as a non musician, it blew me away !! It was a good year for me seeing concerts. Saw Return to Forever, Jean Luc Ponty, Santana, and John Lee Hooker with A very young Robert Cray opening in a small Tempe club.

That was an amazing flash of time for hybrid jazz, rock, whatever…

Deicide and Behemoth show was last night. Both put on truly stellar performances, especially for bands that are 30+ years in. Was my first time seeing Deicide and their amazing guitar work and tight set did not disappoint.

Even though I haven’t liked any Behemoth albums for 10+ years (since “The Satanist”), they still put on a absolutely epic live show.

Even though the pit was more chill that I was expecting, I’m still tired and sore as hell this morning. Such are the perils of Tuesday night metal shows when you’re nearing 52, I suppose.

A really great old, old tune, performed many years ago with a large ensemble and a chorus of many. It’s a song everyone can sing, with endless harmony options.

It’s nice to see a young man who is so obviously George’s son, playing and singing along.

The story of the Beatles and Billy Preston is worth a mention. They’d first encountered him in Hamburg when he was 16. (Truant officers typically didn’t get passports. Heh.)

George saw him again in January 1969 playing for Ray Charles in London, makes the connection.

In the Get Back sessions in studio they were really floundering, George takes off for a while and comes back with Billy, who helps calm things down and adds just what the band needs, later becomes known as the “Fifth Beatle”… music legend.

He’s the only musician to get co-billing, on Get Back. “The Beatles with Billy Preston”.

George was very into eastern religion, I’ve shown a couple of my coworkers from India the song & lyrics. The Hindi / Sanskrit backup lines supplement the English in a beautiful way.

As life goes, Billy had his own journey, but great to see him back for this tribute. Must have been a special night, I’ve watched that video 50 times.

The videos of the Get Back sessions are worth a watch. Hard to wrap my mind around the fact when they broke up, the oldest one - Lennon - was 29. Harrison was 27. Wow.
