@salUTE @330ute @SkinyUte et al. What do you y’all think?
For those who are musically inclined or intent listeners, check out Joni here, playing a traditional Appalachian instrument in a very non-traditional song. She’s playing off rhythm but never loosing the melody of her song
But what exquisite poise, timing and songcraft. Her voice is so effortless. Live TV, sans backup band or performance for distraction - or a little cover. Simple dress and talent that can’t be denied.
She has what I’ve always heard referred to as “big T talent”. Talent that is so immense that even if you don’t like her style, you recognize and appreciate it regardless.
Add that musical ability to her sense of poetry and storytelling and it’s impossible to deny that she has “it”…whatever “it” is.
Speaks of the 80’s
Bravo Joni ! Bravo
Great piece, thanks for posting. I’ve always loved her stuff, but somehow never had any of her recordings, so I’m only familiar with what I grew up listening to on the radio. What I remember about her is that lovely rock-solid falsetto she often used, and did so more effectively than most singers, and her songwriting, which seemed to include lyrical phrasing and rhyming in atypical rhythms. She is a poet.
I discovered recently that she had done a bunch of jazz recordings with the likes of Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius, and Wayne Shorter. Again, not sure how I missed these, but I put an item on my TODO list to order some. You’re post reminded me that I hadn’t yet done so, so I’m planning to do so today.
Edit to say – just read this article talking about her use of music therapy to recover from the stroke she suffered. Glad to know she’s back performing.
Yes people accused her of going to “jazzy” but she’s always been her own person and followed her bliss.
By the way, every single album cover is one of her paintings. She actually considers herself to be a painter first and was trained as a painter early in life.
Finally, she’s also famously known for very atypical cording and guitar tuning. Some of which she was proprietally quite secretive. As a professional guitarist, you might dive deeper into that realm ![]()
She was another favorite from back in the day. She’s one of my wifes favorites, and we saw the Musical about her life on Broadway several years ago, which was fabulous. I think the run on broadway is done, but we saw the performance at Pioneer Theatre earlier this year and it was very well done. I think it is scheduled at Eccles Theater again sometime soon.
There is a television commercial I keep hearing recently that features this melody, which I haven’t thought about for a long time. I’ve always loved this song.
There’s something about music that heals the soul
My favorite Beatles song.
