The new coach speculation thread

I had heard this also, like months ago. Don’t remember where. But it fits with my thinking on K3’s relationship with players for a long, long time.

@SeattleUte, I’m genuinely interested in your top four picks for Utah’s next HC in BB. Thanks.

An excellent point. Also, have you ever been to Tucson?

My top pick has been Craig Smith all along as I’ve commented. I would be happy with anyone with a head coaching record of success and that is what should be the focus. I believe that that is the only way you have any control over your future and are not just engaging in a total crap shoot. There is no way to know if an assistant lacking head coaching experience is cut out for being head coach, which only a sliver of the basketball industry is cut out for.

Great. Maybe you should sit this one out. Your ranking has been shot through with dangerous assumptions and outright fantasy.

Craig Smith? Meh, he won’t be any better than Larry K.

It’s a crapshoot wherever you are looking. Giac was a HC with experience and that was a disaster. Shaka, Archie, etc. No guarantees.

This is the truth. Shaka Smart was the hottest coaching name… until the Texas fans cheered as he left for Marquette.

I’ll cheer for whoever we get. Having a supportive fanbase increases the odds a bit in the crapshoot. A part of the team’s future success is on us. That’s something we (as individuals) can control.

Garden spot.

A close friend of mine has a similar view. He thinks Utah should selection a coach who has had “success” at two programs to minimize the risk to Utah. I see his point. While he loves AJ, AJ did not fill this ‘qualifier’ in his mind. Therefore, he was lukewarm on him becoming HC.

PS: heard from Twitter that Johnnie Bryant has said he is not interested in the Utah job.

I’m not sure what this means. It seems to suggest that Utah without Majerus is not that attractive of a place to coach, which is what the sports writers were suggesting.

I think he’s saying the right coach will make utah a contender again.

Craig Smith is a meh candidate.

This search has really turned into nothing to write home about

I understood from your summary that they were saying that Utah was one of three dominant teams in a conference that perennially gets 3 bids, but now it’s middling in a conference that gets 4-5 bids. Their reasoning is circular. Nothing consigns Utah to a middling status in the PAC 12 other than coaching.

Regardless. I think he’s the next man up.

No matter what, I’m gonna be all in on the next coach. Got to allow Harlan to have one failed hire before flipping over tables. Right?

Yes.

At this point that phrase could mean it’s the guy who barely made it out of basic training.

Talking about a crapshoot, Shaka was a ‘sure thing’, a homerun hire to revitalize the Texas program after Barnes (who is having similar results at Tennessee). Shaka led VCU to 4 or 5 straight NCAAs and had a deep run.

Looks like they are calling Calipari, Beard (Tech), and Samson (Houston). I bet they get none of them.

Nobody is saying anyone is a sure thing. We’re talking about odds. Is that confusing?
