The cool pictures thread

My dad designed the airbags for the 1st rover mission (Pathfinder/Sojourner). It’s come a long way - airbags no longer work for the bigger rovers - this one was almost a ton. The 7 minutes of terror and the retrorockets are pretty amazing tech.

I know this is the cool pictures thread, but picture this:

  • you don’t own a car
  • you subscribe to a ride service
  • you call for a ride, a self-driving EV picks you up and drops you off
  • the self-driving EV does this until it goes and charges itself in various centralized garages/lots

Now picture that you own the car and make money from it as it works while you do or you (instead of sitting there). We need many fewer parking lots. Home garages become smaller or obsolete or a workshop. I think we eventually get there. I’m investing in companies that I think will help us get there.

Picture this: you want to travel - you get in a sleeper car that drives overnight to your destination. No hotel cost. Transformative.

“Pulitzer Prize award winning photojournalist Deanne Fitzmaurice won the highly respected award in 2005 for the photographic essay “Operation Lion Heart”. Operation Lion Heart is the story of a 9-year-old Iraqi boy who was severely injured by an explosion during one of the most violent conflicts of modern history – the Iraq War. The boy was brought to a hospital in Oakland, CA where he had to undergo dozens of life-and-death surgeries. His courage and unwillingness to die gave him the nickname: Saleh Khalaf, “Lion Heart”. Photographer: Deanne Fitzmaurice.”

This deserves an award.

I’ve missed this place terribly. I’m a Ute through and through, and it’s good to be home.

That is a true Cheech and Chong reset, only it was Chong’s sister and the sample was for his PO to totally ■■■■ with his mind.

A couple of airliners on short final to SLC… not flying in formation, they’re on approach to different runways.

Hawk over our hot-tub. It’s been hitting a lot of birds and varmints lately and consuming them in a large tree next to the house.

This is an appropriately named thread. A red star to the whole thing.

Went to a Picasso showing at our local gallery in Nashville and ran into “Sevaro, Chief of the Capota Ute” painting by Charles Schreyvogel.

if anyone can identify this bird please do. It’s not a red-tail: but it’s a big bird. I think it might be a sharp-shinned hawk. It has chirped at both of us, but I don’t think it’s a kestrel. It doesn’t seem big enough to take a cat, but it’s been nailing everything else in sight.

Disclaimer I am by no means an expert - not even close - just interested in birds. Sharp-shinned or Cooper’s hawk would be my guess based on the pic and what you said about its behavior. And more likely a Cooper’s.

Thanks so much!
yeah, I must say, we added a small personal hot tub a year ago and it’s just been extraordinary to be outside in the backyard (when we normally wouldn’t be at all) and to observe so much it’s really been a treat.
Just last week one of our neighbors lost their cat for 2 days and my wife and I had seen the very same hawk dive into their backyard without coming up We didn’t see it take anything, but we were starting to fear the worst.
Well, fortunately another neighbor opened their garage door and the cat came out unscathed but hungry. We were afraid we had witnessed the hawk attack the declawed cat, but hopefully it’s got 8 more lives to go.

Excuse the photo of a (dirty) photo, but inspired by @UtahFanSir ‘s visit to Colorado National Monument, I present a photo of a spectacular sunset taken in the opposite direction, from the bottom of the hill off South Camp Road at my parents’ old house taken in 1998. It hung on the wall there until my mom passed away and is now at my office.

You just never know what good things will happen. I have been sending beautiful holiday wreaths to key clients for the past few years. One client loves hers so much that she leaves them on her front door long after the holidays are over. Here’s what happened in the Hollywood Hills:
