Playoff Expansion to 12 Official

More football. Ugh.

Edit: ugh is my response till I see if this is more at large than guaranteed spots.

From my standpoint this helps the PAC stay together and expand.

CFB needed some good news - this works.

Money ain’t everything. The Utes of 2004 and 2008 appreciate this evolution. :sunglasses:

OK. Not as bad as I thought. 6 Champs and 6 at large. If the 12-team format was implemented last season, something like:

OK State (9) @ Ole Miss (8), winner plays in Tuscaloosa vs Alabama
Pitt (12) @ Notes Dame (5), winner plays Cincy vs Bearcats
Utah (11) @ Ohio State (6), winner plays in Waco vs Baylor
Mich State (10) @ UGA (7), winner plays in Ann Arbor vs Michigan

Utah’s path most likely for a title last season would have been @ Ohio State, @ Baylor, Neutral site game vs Georgia (Rose Bowl), and Neutral site against Alabama.

EDIT: Georgia wouldn’t get a bye because they aren’t conference champs. New rules say you have to be champ for the bye. So, Baylor would get that bye.

The Rose Bowl last year against Ohio State was so exciting. Imagine what it would have been like as a playoff game. But @Ohio State may have been too much.

I think I’m glad the CFP grew to 12. The format doesn’t seem too bad. If I had my way the conference champs (Utah for my example) should get the homefield. Ohio State was not the BIG conference champ. I realize that is something similar to the NFL where division winners get the home wild card game, or at least used to since I think about it some.

I hope the kinks get worked out sooner rather than later.

Edit to fix OSU to “not BIG champ”

CFB needed to do something to slow or stop this consolidation. This proposal is a good start.

It probably won’t get Hawaii 2.0 and 2.1 to reconsider their jump, but it might give the BIG12 a moral boost to bounce East Provo back to Indy after that BS in Provostan last week.

No. Ohio was not champ.

Mistype on my part I left on not the champ.

fixed it.

I screwed this up. This is how it would look.

OK State (9) @ Ole Miss (8), winner plays in Tuscaloosa vs Alabama
Pitt (12) @ UGA (5), winner plays Cincy vs Bearcats
Utah (11) @ Notes Dame (6), winner plays in Waco vs Baylor
Mich State (10) @ Ohio State (7) winner plays in Ann Arbor vs Michigan

So, actually, Utah would have had ND, Baylor and winner of OSU vs Michigan.

I just swapped Georgia and Baylor initially but Georgia obviously would have been ranked higher than ND and Ohio State even after losing the SEC Title.

2020 Playoff would have been:

UGA (9) @ Cincy (8) winner plays in Tuscaloosa vs Alabama (1)
12 San Jose State @ Notre Dame winner plays in Norman vs Oklahoma (4)
Indiana (11) @ TAMU (6) winner plays in Columbus vs Ohio State (3)
Iowa State (10) @ Florida (7) winner plays in Clemson vs Clemson (2)

Since Coastal Carolina wasn’t able to play in the Conference title game they wouldn’t qualify as a conf champ and Oregon was a champ but lower ranked than SJ State so the Pac 12 loses a bid to MWC.

2019 Playoff would have been:

Florida (9) @ Wisconsin (8) winner plays in Baton Rouge vs LSU (1)
Memphis (12) @ Georgia (5) winner plays in Norman vs Oklahoma (4)
Utah (11) @ Oregon (6) winner plays in Clemson vs Clemson (3)
Penn State (10) @ Baylor (7) winner plays in Columbus vs Ohio State (2)

Memphis being the 6th Conference champ jumps Auburn for the 12th spot.

Love it. Top 4 get a first round bye which rewards excellence and keeps the regular season important. 6 at-large doesn’t really leave anyone out.

Not perfect but such a huge step.

Here’s a question. If this was the playoff format in 2019, would both Oregon and Utah have gone?

Um,

And played each other…:face_with_diagonal_mouth:
We can’t get away from each other.

Sometimes tournaments lead to early rematches. Now, if both were higher ranked and one won the conference then there’d at least would be a gap between games. It’s definitely a need to be top 4 end of year and win conference for the bye.

I think the CFP would manipulate the rankings

No reason to with the top 4 mandated to be conference champs.
