Still love hearing Bill Raftery.
True, they don’t. They do see us as annoying, and see the fact that we have succeeded against them as evidence that Helton is a weak coach because he has no business losing to Utah, of all schools. ![]()
Can I get some analysis from you experts on Baylor’s chances Monday night? I don’t know much about them but it sounds like they have guards that do most of the damage. Do they have some bigs to throw at the zags?
I’d hate to choose between Virginia-Auburn or Gonzaga-UCLA as the greatest semi-final game ever. I do belive that Villanova-North Carolina was the greatest championship game ever. I’ve been watching the game a long time. I also think that Virginia’s national championship run in 2019 was the most eventful and miraculous in history. Funny how these games continue to surpass any other sport’s madness and drama even as some like Sancho and concerned claim that college basketball is in a death spiral.
Yes, there are ones and dones, but for many reasons, a hell of a lot more very good basketball players overall in the college game than ever before.
I would choose UCLA NC state 1974 as the greatest semi final. Overtime. Bill Walton versus David Thompson. Ended UCLA’s legendary run.
And maybe Georgetown UNC as the greatest final, Because of the number of legendary players playing
NC State vs Houston in 1983 was one of the great finals ever
The UCLA-Louisville semi is also a candidate. Wooden’ s last year vs. his protege Denny Crum. Overtime. Richard Washington hit a baseline jumper to beat Louisville by 1, after Louisville’s backup PG who was 100% from the line and had been put in specifically to take the foul missed the front end of the one and one.
But I’m biased. I was there! It was after that game that my brother and I promised each other that if the Utes ever made it to the Final Four we’d be there no matter where we lived or our station in life. And we kept it! That is another story itself.
I pick Villanova-NC as the greatest title game because you can’t top the NC double pumps 3 followed by the Villanova buzzer beater 3.
This is the greatest NCAA game. Mainly because it makes the UK fans lose their minds even today when they show that shot:
Laettner not missing a shot is the greatest performance.
I am guessing your & your brother’s station in life was not an issue when you went to San Antonio
There was an issue related to that. After the Arizona game, I called my brother and reminded him that we promised one another we would go. He said he couldn’t because he had a meeting with Richard Branson in London scheduled on championship game Monday, to pitch for funding for his new startup. I persuaded him to go to the semi-finals; Al McGuire said that’s the best part, the best thing in sports, where all four teams are present with their fans and the four colors. I assured him the Utes would lose to Carter, Jamieson, et al. He figured out he could fly out of San Antonio Saturday night after the game and make the meeting. We met in San Antonio with our dad and his son. When Utes did the unthinkable, he unsuccessfully tried to reschedule his meeting. He went to the game anyway, and never did meet with Branson.
That was a great Championship game. I never knew I could stress over any Arizona Wildcats team.
Agreed. Although it was just an elite eight game, the fact that you had a stacked Duke team (C Laettner, B Hurley, Grant Hill, maybe Cherokee Parks on the bench?) against a Kentucky team that has A LOT of true Kentuckians on the team (no one-and-doners here) makes this a blue blood classic.
Yeah, I moved from LA in High School to the same town and HS as Feldhaus who was guarding Christian on the shot. Needless to say, no one has gotten over that. Mashburn was the only future NBA player on UK if I remember correctly.
If they blew us out we didn’t deserve to advance.
I’m rooting for the Bulldogs. Baylor kicked their asses early. It amazing it’s within 10.
A lot of folks still hold a grudge against Baylor for murder and rape coverups.
What in the world is Baylor doing in the paint? Freebies.
Probably would never happen at a University run by the Jesuits.
There is that. Trying to argue he saw Utah as a threat doesn’t make that go down any better.
Anything they want.
