Hoop Utes preseason thread

Utah looked pretty sloppy to me. It’s hard to complain about a 31-point win. Still, it’s hard to know what to think of this team just yet.

I thought Dawes played great. He stayed aggressive when I thought that some others we less interested in gettin to the rim

I like Wahlin, too. His D is solid. A couple of times he needed to be better and squeezing the ball and not losing it, but in the big picture that felt like nits.

I’ll echo 77’s comment about the weird feeling of sloppiness. I thought that for a stretch in the 2nd half, and then had to catch myself a little when at the time we were up by 28. Clean some of that stretch up and we win by 40.

My 9 year old grandson had a great time. My son told me he was pretty excited to go and having that kind of 1 on 1 time with a kid is priceless. Since my wife isn’t a big basketball fan (don’t mess with her on football, though) my plan is to get as many games with the young family boys as possible. Need to get them hooked, which will be easy with the 11 year old who’s playing on his school’s 8th grade team this year. (He’s 1/3 the size of on of the Poly kids on that team. LOL)

PS: I was thinking yesterday that if we had a decent student section it would have been in a great position to be giving Utah Tech crap about zucchinis and egg plants, but I guess the 25 students that come to the games aren’t up on the news.

Any word on when Lovering and/or Keller may be ready to play?

Hopefully we get them back and ready before conference games start. Something tells me small ball isn’t going to get it done against KU, ‘Zona, or anybody else in this conference.

My son and I sat behind some 2nd graders, boys who were shirtless and showing their coolness…at least until one of the arena people came and told the host mom they needed to put their shirts back on, Lol

It was fun while it lasted.

In the post game, Craig said they originally thought mid-December, but he thought it might be sooner. They’ve been gradually getting more involved in practice.

Craig talked a little about how they’ve been developing the team in an uneven manner, guys playing out of position because of the injuries.

Likeable guy, I wish him (and us) well. I think the salary situation next year may benefit MBB, just a little.

Game tonight against Miss Valley St. (we beat them by 94 a few years ago)

I remember that game well, 143-49. Utah set a record for margin of victory and points in a game. IMSVU was so, so bad, and they didn’t even try. The players literally stood around and let Utah do whatever it happened. Utah might has well have played the Provo 200th Ward Elders Quorum that night. I was actually pretty embarrassed that Utah won by that much, but MVSU was so utterly bad and disinterested that Utah couldn’t help but keep scoring. I expect a much, much better effort from the Delta Devils tonight. But Utah should still win by 40.

Weird fact about the ESPN+ crew tonight. Play-by-play guy Drew Goodman called the famous Utah-BYU football game with Irv Brown in 1988. I recorded that game and watched it over and over.

Lovering sighting! …with the same longish hair and headband as Branden Carlson, made me think it was a re-run for 2 seconds.

Keller, too!

Also calls Rockies games, so he’s a master of talking about any and all other topics besides how bad the Rockies are getting worked…which I increasingly admire as a skill. He really earns his salary.

That Irv Brown call with Buster Matheny made Paul James’ eyes roll around in the back of his head as he bawled out in fluent Babylonian. Awesome moment in Ute history.

Well, at least some of the guys got to make some highlight reel material. Definitely a RUTS game.

We made the same comment when we got there tonight.

I really wish Utah would play a few more decent opponents in non-league games. I guess St. Mary’s and Iowa are coming up, but I feel like three decent/good opponents mixed with eight awful ones isn’t going to prepare this team very well.

just browsing sports today and noticed byu basketball played tonight. They lost to Ole Miss. I checked the box score to see how Keita did. He played 19 minutes but didnt score or attempt a shot.

Sigh! That’s depressing.

Yeah, he doesn’t do a ton for them. BYU has two other guys that are basically clones of Keita. No idea why he transferred there. I guess Daddy Bucks Ryan Smith opened his wallet and got him some nice NIL money. He has also bought some Russian one-and-done guy, another European player, and some four-star kid that otherwise would never go to BYU.

Burgess is why Keita transferred

Lame. I think Ryan Smith’s money got Burgess down there too. Why doesn’t Smith focus on making the Jazz into something that isn’t laughable and embarrassing?

This is a really poor rumor that likely isn’t true.

Smith certainly supports them, but the blank check stuff by him has from what I can tell been entirely spread by Utah fans.

With my job I actually have some crossover into the Jazz Utah HC world, and interact with people who work directing with Ryan.

He’s a good guy who is sinking a ton of money into the Jazz and Utah HC. Money is not the reason the Jazz are in a rebuild.

The Millers may be loved by most in this state. But they did a ton of damage to the Jazz
