Hoop Utes preseason thread

I worked for a Miller owned company for a bit before Larry died. Larry was great. Greg was the exact opposite. I’ll leave it at that.

It sounds like you have a lot more inside info than I have but some byu booster has very deep pockets for NIL. I think Smith is more than likely the one writing the checks. Before NIL, none of those top recruits were ever going to byu. Smith did meet with the #1 recruit in the country, who is supposedly leaning towards going to byu.

If it’s not Smith, I wonder who is funding it all.

Utah v EWU isn’t a bad game. They’re a much better test than last Tuesday. Up 58-50 at the 12 min to go TO. In the first half it was pretty chippy. Almost looked like a brawl would break out.

Meanwhile at the Hunty, Utah has coughed up what was a 16 point lead with 10 to play and now leads by 4 with 3:43 left. Ugh.

Utes win 88-80. This is a decent team. They deserve some butts in the seats next Saturday against St. Mary’s.

Scrappy effort by the visiting Eagles who didn’t give up. Really a night where shots didn’t fall for us.

I noted to my seatmates at the 4 minute time out that despite us letting a weaker team give us more of a battle than they should, the last minutes of tight games where you either rise to the occasion and pull out the win or fade away and lose are big difference makers. Utah came out on top.

Should be a much bigger challenge facing St. Mary’s this weekend.

Just turned into the Saint Mary’s game. With a little eight minutes to go in the first half it’s 27 to 14 for the bad guys. Team not looking good at the moment.

I must admit I haven’t been following the team closely this preseason. Is St. Mary’s a worthy opponent?

I hardly recognize any of the players, Lohner is playing, although it was hard to tell if he’s contributing. He can’t have had much time to practice with the team.

Shooting 8-34 from the field. That’s atrocious.

playing much better in the 2nd, cut 17 point lead down to 5

What happened to Mongolian Mike? He barely played.

Under 30% from 3 and under 40% shooting. 59% FT. Hmmm…

Much better second half. Had it down to 2 at 57-55 but then wilted down the stretch. Sigh. St. Mary’s is a solid team, but Utah will play like 10 teams in conference play better than St. Mary’s.

Sorry, didn’t know where else to put this, but I saw today that BYU basketball got a commitment from the No. 1 recruit in the nation. Word is he is getting $5 million in NIL money. Thanks, Ryan Smith. Disgusting.

It’s not TDS’s fault that it has $$$ donors. If Utah had $$$ basketball donors now, how would we feel?

Of course, personally, I just don’t believe in the current NIL structure and, as a result, my interest in money sports has meaningfully waned.

I meant that I hate NIL altogether. It’s ruining college sports.

With the salary cap for NBA rookies, he will literally take a pay cut when/if he’s drafted.

That was the joke back when Tarkanian was coaching UNLV, that their players took a pay cut when they were drafted. NIL has killed that joke.

Speaking of Tark. I remember people complaining that he had players who didn’t graduate. I liked his response. “Sure, let’s not let these kids play basketball. Let’s make them stay in the hood”. He also said: “My kids don’t graduate? Schools back east graduate kids that can’t even talk”. I believe that was an unsubtle dig at Georgetown.

…Yeah, and they only practice when they want to.

Ryan seems to be undermining another hobby - the Utah Jazz. He’s definitely not presenting himself as having anything like a coherent vision.

How does this news impact the morale of current Jazz players? What do you think, Lauri Markennan?

Dear Ryan Smith - the way you throw money around does not occur in a vacuum, sir. Don’t be stupid enough to think one does not affect the other.

When I see this foolishness I just remind myself Sam Battistone was an Uber-wealthy guy in his day, too who pissed away a fortune on the Jazz to watch them suck.
