Utes play the Zoobs tomorrow. What is the feeling about this game? Can the Utes get this one? BYU hasn’t been great on the road. I would love Utah to win this one.
Line seems to be BYU +1.5. Will probably be a close and tough battle between two mediocre teams. BYU just did lose to TCU just before Utah won, so… Not sure how it will turn out.
I think we lack basketball boosters period.
When Huntsman died the main booster no longer existed.
Larry’s stories are great, but he seems to equate them with Chris Hill, when I really think Huntsman made Hill’s job fairly easy when it came to basketball.
Yeah, I think you are correct.
I don’t know what will make it change. I’ve heard the owner of the Colorado Rockies is a Utah Alum, it would be nice if he would throw some cash our way.
He has. To baseball. He’s behind their new stadium
There are probably 20 ingredients it takes to be at a high level in college basketball. NIL money addresses some important ones, but there are more than a few teams that pass the eyeball test but are seriously underperforming.
I was heartened at how the JMHC came to life last year as the team rebounded, the NIT support was definitely a step in the right direction. Deivon was a big draw. The Triple OT game vs Arizona was one for the ages.
Utah hoops isn’t dead, it’s like unwatered grass in September. It’ll come back.
Feels like that grass hasn’t been watered since the early 2000s
Hopeful there’s a bunch of fan support tomorrow night.
With this big game coming up, I was thinking about the glory days of Utah basketball, 1991–2005, and wondering how amazing it would be to ever get back to that level, or close to it. In those 15 seasons, Utah won 11 conference titles, made 12 NCAA Tournaments, advanced in the tournament 11 times, made five Sweet 16s, two Elite 8s, and finished as the 1998 runner-up. During this span, Utah had 13 20-win seasons, 11 24-win seasons, and seven seasons of at least 27 wins. But perhaps the most impressive stat during this era was that Utah lost only 14 games at home. Only 14 in 15 seasons. That’s pretty incredible.
In the era of NIL and the transfer portal, who knows if we will ever see this type of play again, especially considering Utah is in a much harder conference than they have ever been in.
With a $2M NIL budget & other teams paying that much & more for 1 player is will be hard for Smith or any other coach to make Utes competitive on a higher level.
Oh the pessimism ! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Well the Germans have never done that so….
It’s no fun unless someone does
Fwiw…TCU beat Baylor in Waco tonight 74-71.
ASU, one of the bottom 3 teams in the B12 just upset #22 West Virginia.
College basketball is brutally competitive. Everyone loses, and almost everyone if not everyone loses badly sometimes. Snap judgments are hard to resist but should be resisted. When a program like Utah has a magical year, stars have to line up improbably. Butterfly effects: Imagine a world where Andre Miller went somewhere else. Even with Majerus there were many contingencies, most went his way, some didn’t.
Saying the start at Houston is rough is an understatement. UH shooting 82% FG because they’re easy buckets.
Utes turning it over and frittering away the shot clock. Going to be a long afternoon.
5-23.
Well, it was nice to see us win 3 in a row, but reality just showed up. Down 35 and getting worse.
Ouch
