Hoop Utes 2025 Reg Season

Thought I would start a new thread for the hoop Utes regular season.

Utah beats TCU in Fort Worth 73-65.

Good to see them get the win on the road.

Isn’t this 2 now on the road or am I just mistaken?

No. The previous win was at home vs Oklahoma State.

Ah, ok. So, even better to get one on the road.

I love it when we really move the ball to create open shots. Not a fan of Madsen, or anyone else, just jacking up shots falling every which way. This isn’t pre-season playing against nobodies.

What I love about most of Dawes’s finishes are a result of movements and assists.

Mason Madsen had 5 minutes against Ok. State and was a DNP-CD last night. He was dressed and ready to play and remained engaged with his teammates throughout last night. Just an interesting observation.

I didn’t see Lohner in the lineup.

Lohner played for a bit early on and then never got back in.

Mason Madsen Vlog about the TCU trip.

Includes:

  • Hotel fire alarm + dancing in the hallway
  • J-walking diagonally across an intersection to a CVS pharmacy
  • “We don’t belong here” experience because team partitioned away from other restaurant patrons
  • Mason suited up with a defective shoe.
  • Gabe and Mason’s mom drives to all their games in an RV
  • Ezra smoked the “Are you smarter than a 5th grader?” quiz.
  • Mason talks about the importance of a conference road win, even while he didn’t play, even though he was healthy, first time in his career.

Seriously, another nice VLog entry. Pretty cool.

Decent read.

Short answer: no. More detailed answer: highly unlikely.

In about 1995 or so, my brother and I took over my parents seats that they had when the Huntsman opened in 1969, We are likely giving them up after this year.

Looks like we can avoid finishing dead last in the conference as was predicted in pre-season polls, but simply don’t have the horses we need to make the dance in the near future unless we get a big infusion of NIL $$$$.

Its very depressing

For sure, it’s one of the reasons I started to extricate myself my $$ college sports a while ago.

I may be way off here, but part of me wonders if some of the big boosters are waiting for Smith to be fired before they start donating to MBB NIL. As it stands now it doesn’t look like Utah MBB has the NIL to really compete. Also, I don’t think Smith has the coaching chops to get it done, every year they are lacking what it takes to be truly competitive. They lack toughness & the defense has never been good enough. That’s coaching. I realize NIL, along with the transfer portal, has completely changed the game, in a short amount of time, but Smith’s HS recruiting is terrible.

With a $20 million hard cap on compensation for athletes, and the Title IX ruling from the NCAA in play, this is all going to be headed back to court sooner than later.

It’s time to say athletics is no longer a collegiate thing. It is a collegiate-adjacent thing. Soon it will be collegiate-in-name-only.

I took over my in-laws seats, center court, row 14, on the center aisle, in 1996 for the same reason, I had been attending frequently with them, or with my father, or grandfather since the early 60’s as a young boy in the Field House.

Basketball was always my favorite sport, I loved the Utes and preferred the college game to the NBA (although I did regularly purchase a 1/4 season each year from about 89-96.

I didn’t give up on the program easily, but I let my tickets go a few years ago after growing tired of the mediocrity, the change in the culture, the lack of supportive crowds, the black curtain, and the inconsistency.

It’s taken a few years, but I’ve completely filled the void and rarely attend or even watch games.

It’s a shame, and I’m sorry things have been so un-Utah like for most of the last 20 years.
