Who let him? Who hired him? P12 CEO group.
Um, no. The Mountain West is the worst option. I agree it’s a lateral move. But it’s a NECESSARY lateral move because otherwise, they’re going to back to the Mountain West again. Either that or independence. I feel bad for Wazzu and Oregon State though, because they’re almost certainly going to have to join the Mountain West or go independent. That being said, those two are actually going to be in a beneficial situation because the top 6 conference champions are guaranteed playoff bids. Well, with no Pac-12 anymore, that guarantees TWO group of five schools are going to be in the CFP every season. If Oregon State and Wazzu dominate the Mountain West like Utah, BYU, and TCU used to do, they’re likely going to earn CFP bids. Not too bad actually. The Mountain West is about to take over the Pac-12 niche at a lesser capacity.
[Loud applause from the LA Ute family homestead.]
There’s apparently an Arizona Board of Trustees (Regents, maybe? People who make decisions for Arizona and ASU) meeting this afternoon and they are expected to give a aye/nay on moving to the B12.
If they vote aye, then we hold our breath and wait to see what happens. I would hope we make the jump as well, since the P12/10/9/7 will be thoroughly and completely imploded at that point. This all just sucks.
Pouring one out for all the folks I saw getting P12 tattoos after the last realignment. ![]()
I have one PAC12 mug and I’m tossing it. I’m not buying any B12 if we go there because I see it all as temporary furniture rearranging while the house is on fire. With FSU and Clemson and the Big10 all jumping into the fray, college football as we knew it is ending and the mess that is resulting isn’t going to stop now. It’s just going to keep going until we have the NCAAFNFL East and West and then some pioneer league feeders
I’m gonna watch this year as it’s scheduled and have no real expectations for my favorite sport to survive in a good way after that. If I’m wrong I’ll celebrate being wrong. But Big12 poaching PAC12 is like the sniffles symptom of a brain hemorrhage.
The sky isn’t falling but those meteors are and they are going to blow ■■■■ up.
As a fan of both schools who doesn’t live in Utah, I think the rivalry is best played every year.
#1) It gets casual fans interested across the state. I know fans of both schools that only watch the Holy war. Heck, my uncle watched the 2021 Utah @BYU game, but he hasn’t watched either Rose bowl. The dude really doesn’t care much about football, even if he teaches up on campus.
#2) Regional rivalries being scrapped is a sad thing. The fact that BYU and Utah will now play only 1 time in 4 years is sad to me.
#3) It is a big game. You can all say you don’t care about teh BYU vs Utah game. But your forum shows that the BYU games get just as much traffic as the Rose Bowl games.
Lastly, I know there is a good chance my words will fall on deaf ears to many of the ardent and hard core fans. For these fans winning a instate rivalry game just isnt the same level of importance as national rankings and national relevance. I get it.
But for people like me, I want the game played annually, and I live out of state.
I completely agree, I wish the Pac12 stayed with all 12 teams (including UCLA/USC). I am not a fan of this latest round of realignment.
Well there is only one thing left to do.
Win the whole ■■■■■■■ thing.
Take the religious aspect out, and the rivalry becomes more civilized. Many of us grew up with the super smug douchie “religious”, the campus is our universe, BYU fans (during LaVell’s glory years at BYU), and they’ve clouded how we look at BYU. That view is not good thanks to those fans. That’s not to say that Utah doesn’t have its reverse of those fans, they just don’t hang out here on UF.N w/o being called out on said behavior.
Yes, BYU gets talked about a lot here, just as I suspect Utah does on cougarboard.
FWIW I think a break in the rivalry isn’t/wasn’t a bad thing. I hope that it has helped cool the idiocy of the worst of both fanbases.
I live near the triangle, I get to see the Duke/UNC rivalry decently well. It’s not the same level of hatred/dislike that the Utah/BYU one has. Both fanbases know that they’ll end up working with each other in the real world. So, sure, take jabs at each other, but don’t be dicks. Same goes if you throw NC State into the mix, although they have a well earned inferiority complex. They don’t do as well against UNC or Duke as they’d wish. Yet all 3 fanbases are pretty decent to each other across the board.
All this said, I hope my Utes end up someplace stable.
Indeed.
My family was directly involved in a significant University Hospital project that had its entire funding frozen by the TDS deities in the state legislature because the Utes didn’t renew playing TDS. It’s that kind of bullcrap that infuriates me. We’re also a Tar Heel family and we never hear of that kind of political retribution by Blue Devil legislators exerting their influence in the triangle.
I think you helped prove my point. The UNC/Duke/NCSU rivalries are entertaining. But there is no retribution if someone loses, aside from whatever bet someone may have made.
The Utah/BYU rivalry has been toxic. Even watching from afar for the last 10 or years you can see it. I really do thing a break was needed to cool things off. Hopefully the worst offenders are shunned.
They’re actually trying to run for Congress in the upcoming special election.
The five or six threads on this topic would be perfectly merged into a new thread so titled.
my love of college sports (at least hoops and football) is as low as its ever been. I dont see an end to the instability of college athletics. It was good while it lasted.
Maybe some of you have seen this. Some people believe an announcement could come tomorrow.
https://www.si.com/college/utah/football/utah-reportedly-likely-to-join-the-big-12
Dan Patrick said Oregon is having a meeting tomorrow to discuss the whole situation, too.
This goose might be cooked as early as this weekend.
Does anyone know Utah’s approach? Does the Board have to meet or have they passed authority on to Randall? Do they have to meet to approve the change? I think they have to announce a mtg 24 hours before? Just seems really quiet on our side, esp. if AZ schools make a decision today
I get that some people like it and others don’t.
The last I heard, Randall could approve a media deal if it met the standards set by the board.
Jumping ship? Who knows.
