D-I College football thread, non-Utah edition

It’s a mess, no doubt. Hell, Oklahoma threw a big bag of money at Spencer Rattler sight unseen, only to see him benched for Caleb Williams…then to watch Williams follow Riley to U$C.

I could see Romey reglossing Raiola “Payola” because it does seem that recruitment is all about the Benjamin’s.

Vandy lands a Ute for QB:

Good luck to the kid.

Great school.

It will be interesting to see what happens with SC after this one:

If this were the U$C of the past, coached by a high caliber coach, they simply replace him because yes, they had that kind of depth.

This team? That could hurt a lot. If there is something to be learned from the last season trudge of the Utes, it is you might need an “almost” #1 QB to backup your #1 QB if you want to win a championship.

Ok, we were so beat up just about everywhere it was a minor miracle we could field enough scholarship players to play some of the games.

Something screams NIL here since the Huskers have been about as successful as the Buff over the last decade. Ok, the Buffs had one good season. I don’t thinks the Huskers would know one if it came up, shook their hand, then handed them the award.

I see Rhule found his money. Or Big Red’s alum ponied up the money.

But, yes, also this:

“Make no mistake that a good quarterback in the portal costs, you know, a million to $1.5 million to $2 million right now, just so we’re all on the same page,” Rhule said Wednesday while discussing the state of the program with reporters. “Let’s make sure we all understand what’s happening.”

They didn’t go after anyone in the portal, so maybe a FR is cheaper, but with Raiola committing to Ohio St., flipping to UGA, now to Nebraska, there had to be a decent offer.

Everyone knows this is madness, It’s got to be fixed,

Weird to say but Chip Kelly nailed it. Gotta fix the schedule as well as there probably needs to be something to make them employees with 2 year contracts. Even NFL FA isn’t this wide open. I’m very much for players being paid but we also have to have some rules.

I don’t see how it gets fixed. Professional sports have salary caps, unions and collective bargaining agreements, but players still are able to use their name, image and likeness to secure endorsements. I guess it is possible that federal legislation could be crafted to have universities pay players, but would it be able to prevent NIL. I guess they do it with athletes from outside the US, but those statutes apply to all students from outside the US.

I don’t think many players get endorsements from outside the university collective. Alabama ran all of Bryce Young’s Dr. Pepper contracts through their media partner. There is a way to do it where they still can do outside stuff as well. The biggest thing is making them (Football and maybe hoops) part of the University employment with Medical to make it where they have to sign two-year deals that go both ways. That way a U can’t just drop them if they get injured.

Will Nelson and he end up with the Buffs?

No clue.

Seems to me that NIL is one thing, but you combine that with the open transfer portal and the door is wide open for abuse and excess, with tampering galore. They’ve created a market for collegiate athletes with unlimited compensation.
