BYU fans and apparently Volleyball team are vile

Too lazy to look it up right now, but I recall reading that several Duke players corroborated it.

Maybe she heard " The Sheriff is anear"?

This is basically how I feel.

Yup! I’ve had enough bad interactions with BYU fans and students to believe this happened 100% and the reaction and victim blaming are completely on brand. I’ve heard racist stuff from their fans before so it doesn’t surprise me in the last that it still happens. Hell it happens on our Utah campus as well. Everyone needs to do much better!!

It is when you’re ■■■■■■■ racist.

Closing ranks and playing the denial card only makes things worse. They had an opportunity to learn and grow as an organization and threw it away. Unfortunately it is not shocking or surprising.

Hope the Big 12 throws them out and the WCC doesn’t let their non revenue sports and MBB back in. I know there have been times when the LDS Church Hierarchy has consider abolishing intercollegiate sports from their school’s mission. They may have just found a way to get there and play the victim card at the same time.

I would love this, like when they went to intramurals when Ricks went to BYUI. Their statement that sports is a ‘missionary tool’ is a farce. It’s actually opposite - generally brings out more bad news than good. Maybe it energizes alumni to donate, but a lot of that goes towards sports anyway. Sports used to be to attract student-athletes and compete, but its more and more a marketing tool (see jumps in applications after a school wins a national championship in FB, BB, etc.). I guess the same could be argued for all collegiate revenue sports, but oh well. I’m allowed to have a double standard on my team’s board  .

I think Cougar, a word that would be commonly used in that environment, could be a close enough rhyme that it could be mistaken for the N word.

This feels like when cops do an internal investigation. Lol. Bravo, BYU, Bravo!

That is the testimony/evidence I would like to hear. If they have evidence or heard something, bring it forward.

OK, that made me literally LOL.

I need to watch that again soon.

Cover up by the keystone coppers of BYU. What a sham.

Thanks for getting my reference

The way they framed their investigation is tone deaf and indicative of their broader issues. Instead of saying they conducted a thorough investigation and have been unable to identify the responsible parties, they impugn the character and veracity of the Duke player and the coaching staff and team by casting doubt that the incident even happened. What a bunch of dolts.

In other news, BYU has concluded that if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, it in fact does NOT make any noise.

Well, it has hit the national news, and it appears Duke is saying " F you BYU"

I am not a BYU alum, but it is disingenuous to disregard the amount of information which disproves her account. I read in the Raleigh Observer this morning that other players did not witness the utterance of racist words, or words even alluding to race, but that they witnessed her saying “did I just hear that? Yes, I did hear that.”
Duke went way overboard in a previous instance in falsely accusing their men’s lacrosse players of race-motivated sexual assault without properly investigating the facts of that case. As much as we might want to trash BYU (they deserve it) and as much as their investigation “looks” sketchy because it wasn’t subject to 3rd party review, I think we need to focus on the evidence.

Bringing this into the discussion is the equivalent of saying that BYU’s founder was a racist and the LDS church has exhibited racist behavior, therefore I can conclude there is a greater likelihood that this incident happened. Am I playing this game correctly?

Yeah, it’s easy to let personal bias cloud judgement in this on both sides.

On the Duke player side, she is making a racism accusation against a predominantly white fanbase at an institution with a poor track record on racism and social issues. This feeds into the bias of many in the public, and especially on UF.N who dislike both racist actions, and BYU and their fans,

On the BYU side, they don’t want to admit or believe that this would or could happen. Or if it did, it was the action of an individual and shouldn’t reflect on the institution or fanbase as a whole.

Innocent until proven guilty clearly doesn’t apply to the court of public opinion. Especially on UF.N where personal biases heavily lean against BYU. It would be nice if the evidence was being reviewed and presented by the accuser or an impartial 3rd party. But since this isn’t going to actual court, the UF.N jury will only hear evidence presented by the defendant, and will dismiss that evidence as self serving.

I hate racism. I am certainly no fan of BYU. But I am more interested in seeking the truth before joining the lynch mob for an allegation that hasn’t been corroborated or proven with any evidence. This doesn’t impugns the Duke player’s story or reputation. As i said, it could be a simple mistake or misunderstanding. And it doesn’t mean there aren’t still problems of racism and other social issues at BYU.

I’ll hang up and wait for my BamaFKY rebuke.

I have only one issue with what you just said. Some of y’all take my opinion as some weird attack. I am coming from a POV where I personally, have been on the sidelines of games (some with my own fanbase and yes, some with BYU) where the use of that word is used to yell at players. It is not as rare as people would believe. So, I am not in a “Lynch Mob” a term you really shouldn’t use in a discussion about race. Mainly, because maybe not your region but the one Duke and myself reside in has used to murder black people. The crowd coming at BYU just wants a better society. My family was part of the case that created the term “Stay Woke.” A Judicial Lynching in Alabama:

I get some of you may also be LDS. So, I get that as well. I have many Catholic friends to this day who contend that liberals slandered their church with fake stories that were just hearsay from victims. The difference in the two is the Catholic church had to pay major payouts in lawsuits. All Duke and the public want are for BYU to look within and address a very well-known issue of racism on their campus. It’s something I applaud the Jazz for doing when they recently faced the same charges about their fans.

EDIT: I guess why I a passionate about it comes from my knowledge of my people’s past and current issues. If I don’t call it out it’s going to be generations down the road who are going to be still dealing with this Bull ■■■■.

don’t confuse a lack of information to prove her account as an amount of information to disprove it.

Unfortunately, it will likely remain a he said, she said and we will never know. In this case and the world we live in, typically the ‘white he’ said > ‘black she’ said which is what must change.

And any reasoning that some other word was said and confused would have led to someone speaking out and saying, “well, I heard ______ which might have sounded similar, but I didn’t hear that other word” but no one has come forward saying that either.
