Best restaurants in SLC?

You know, I can’t remember the last time I ate at a Sizzler. It had to be sometime in the late 1970’s.

Ok, get off my lawn.

When I was a kid we considered it a treat to go there for dinner. There was one on 2100 South and 1300 East. In LA we took our boys there when they were young. Last time we went was probably 25 years ago. Looks like this is a Chapter 11, so Sizzler will still be around in some form.

The filing is only for Sizzler’s 14 company-owned restaurants – not its international locations or more than 90 franchised US restaurants. Sizzler explained in a press release that it’s using the bankruptcy process to reduce debt and renegotiate its leases.

They say they’ll be coming out of bankruptcy in 120 days. Take heart, affordable steak sandwich lovers!

That location on 2100S and 1300E is now gone. Closed up a few weeks ago now.

Senior year, we used to sneak out of class and go to that Sizzler for morning coffee break. That is where I learned to drink coffee black. Or maybe it was during independent stuidy period.

I always thought that was such a prime location, I had no idea how a Sizzler stayed there for such a long time. I figured whoever owned that property would want something nicer than a Sizzler.

perfect spot for a Raising Canes Chicken Fingers

I live pretty close to that location and thus have driven past there quite often. Pre pandemic the parking lot was always pretty full. The crowd was mostly older folks but we went there every now and then for a cheap dinner. It will be interesting to see what happens to that property.

I have been driving by there a lot lately and had not even noticed that the restaurant was still there.

My grandparents like going there, especially once my grandmother stopped cooking. It was an opportunity for the family to get together, laugh and hang out. It has good memories for me in that regard. The food was never great, but rarely was it bad. Service could be iffy at the best of times, but we went to be together as a family and have fun, and we did.

I suppose it works for those who are connected via nostalgia. I just don’t get eating in places where the food is worse than my own home (by a wide margin).

Okay.

We rarely eat out here in this part of NC. Mostly because the service, on a good day leaves much to be desired, and on a bad day it’s awful. But back to your point on food. Even when we lived in Salt Lake or Austin, and here in Ea NC I cook much better than most folks. That’s not bragging, it is a fact. I am classically trained. If we eat out now, when we’re home, it’s because I don’t feel like cooking. On the road for officiating or w/e it’s for convenience.

Don’t knock Sizzler. They never pretended to be creme de la creme of dining. But for what they were, they were pretty good. They were consistent, rarely great, and even more rarely awful, you knew what to expect. They trained their people pretty well. What was taught there for service and consistency could be used here.

Until you have only one or 2 good options, and the rest being bad to awful you learn to appreciate consistently decent. So, don’t knock it.

I mean… every restaurant has something on the menu that isn’t terrible. I honestly can’t think of a restaurant that serves what sizzler does that is worse than sizzler. Sizzler is fine, but in most places with a sizzler there are 20 options that are better

Okay.

I like how much attention The Sizzler has in the BEST restaurants in SLC thread. Their fish and chips was awesome! Yeah!

When I was younger, I waited tables and also prep cooked in some very nice restaurants with fantastic high-end food presentation. My wife and I cook all the time and we rarely go out.
I think a lot of restaurants are generally overpriced and overrated.
However, I’ve been to Sizzler a few times with my father-in-law (RIP) and it seemed like a reasonable meal for what you were paying for. You know; served hot, no white tablecloth expectations, but not remarkably below or above what one might expect.
I’ll bet a lot of families, not necessarily cognoscenti on reduced budgets probably had fantastic experiences there.

Not debating any of that, just poking fun at the irony of it. I haven’t been to a sizzler since 1994, but I don’t know that that was because I necessarily thought it was terrible. Just a chain.

Not responding to you personally, just the vibe of the thread

For a long time you could go to Sizzler and get a steak and potato for around 10 bucks. Was it the best steak in the world? No of course not but you always got what you expected; a decent meal at an inexpensive price.

Back in the ‘90’s, my wife and I watched a polygamist family decimate the salad and ice cream bars at Sizzler, after only purchasing just a couple of entrees. Hell, that single night might have bankrupted them.
