I have seen many people saying that Bama was so on fire that no team could have beaten them yesterday. Certainly, Bama was lights out, but some blame has to go to BYU’s defense, right? I can’t imagine Houston giving up 25 threes. Just allowing a team to shoot 51 three-pointers is poor defense, in my opinion.
Bama played at a championship level last night, but indeed when facing that sort of barrage you have to get out there and guard the outside shooters.
I remember a ranked Majerus coached Utah team facing CSU in Fort Collins and the Rams were on fire from the outside (something like 12 for 17 at one point) and Rick got on the team to get out there and closely guard the perimeter and Utah battled back from being down double digits to win.
I read that KY Jelly, using analytics, stuck with covering screens underneath, expecting Bama to come back to earth on 3pt %. They didn’t, and in hindsight was a bad call to not switch or do something else to defend the perimeter. They did a decent job defending in the paint.
I have to dispute that. Bama made 10 of 15 shots inside the arc. If byu did shut them down and they had to dish it back out to the perimeter, well, we know what happened.
Certainly Duke is Duke …
Eh. They tend to be garbage against UF’s Defense. I think Duke runs them off the court.
I hope Houston beats up Duke, and then wins it all. I’d be ok with those results.
Nailed it.
Fran Fraschilla said it well on Saturday when he talked about a basketball season when he said
A season is roughly 35 games, and during that run your team will…
Play 5 games where everything goes right for your team…
Play 5 games where nothing goes right for your team…and
Play 25 games that show you who your team really is.
Not to give credit to TDS, but looking back at Bama’s record this year, they played one of those 5 games where everything went right against the Zoobs. Then they ran into a DOOK team that had all the weapons to simply dominate them.
Well, the Final 4 with all the #1’s making it is pretty anticlimactic. Cinderella definitely didn’t get the chance to dance this year.
Maybe, but I also think Alabama has played so many top 25 teams, and BYU hadn’t been tested as much with their schedule this season (not slamming your league). Sure, Alabama was hitting all those threes, but BYU’s perimeter defense was trash that night.
Ageed. There is NO WAY Alabama hits 25 threes against Houston that night, or any night. Bama was on fire, but BYU defended the three poorly too.
Yup. They only hit 11 vs Houston when they beat them 85-80. That night Alabama outrebounded Houston to get the win.
I may have recency bias, but this is really UF or Duke’s tournament. If we get that final it should be a great game.
