We got âem. What a great game and a great win!
beaUTEful
At the rate theyâre fouling and weâre hitting free throws weâll win by 20.
Huge win! Really fun game! Go UTEs!!!
Wow what a finish! Iâll admit, I had little confidence going into the OT.
And Viera, what a badassâŚ
Just amazing. That was a solid win. It was nice to see the bRuins go 0 for on the road.
Good of the womenâs team to contribute to the middle finger salute send off of from the PAC-12 for the SoCal schools.
Just got home. What a game! UCLAâs scheme worked, but then it didnât.
Pili was stifled all night long, but our shooters stepped up. Iâm not going to mention turnovers or missed layups. Just enjoying a weekend of beating a #6 and a #2.
Utes!
I wasnât able to watch the game but just reading through the comments that Steggy guy sure is a negative Nancy, until he isnât. ![]()
I love that they call the game an upset.
It was the NET #7 at #5, a team playing on the road against a team that is better than that teamâŚ
When I was a younger, games involving the Utes, but mostly Utah-BYU games in basketball and football, were so large and important in my mind that I would start getting anxious butterflies a few days before the contest, and would be angry afterwards if the Utes lost. As I have gotten older I have changed to being a person who sees athletic competition, even involving the Utes, to be entertainment rather than something that had importance and I look back on now as tribal.
The way I felt last night watching the UCLA game, I felt the butterflies and anxiousness I havenât felt in years for a game. I usually look on these occurrences as âbadâ and I find that I can relax quickly and just enjoy the competition. Last night was not one of those nights.
Observations from my couch 2,000 miles away.
I predicted that with UCLAâs size that Pili wouldnât be able to work down low, and it happened. I felt they tried to hard to force it to Pili and she would get blocked or a turnover would occur. Though, I think UCLA holds 95% of the credit here in not letting Pili have much of anything, I thought there were times when Pili didnât quickly pick up on some of the double-teams and forced it. Stanford had the same plan and going forward, if teams have any kind of size, expect to see this more. Hopefully, Pili has learned from the Stanford and UCLA games on that front.
I thought the Utes would need to limit turnovers. Not so much, right? A fair number of those turnovers came from trying to feed the post. This team is usually pretty good at that, but UCLA did a good job of keeping Pili pinned lower (or were able to poke the ball away) so that the entry pass had nowhere to go.
Great to see Young hit some shots and get some early confidence. The announcer said after she hit a 3 that it is not contraversial to say that Young is option #5 in the offense (I would say Vieira is).
McQueen was more aggressive in looking for a shot. This was a key to our scoring with Pili shut down. I especially liked her aggressive play in overtime where she looked to drive and, specifically, the time she was in the corner in front of the Utes bench with the shot clock getting low and UCLA not giving passing options. She put up a 3 that just rattled out, but Pili was there for the rebound and put back. If you canât pass it to Pili, maybe a rebound works. ![]()
Once again, I have to praise Wilke for her effort off the bench. Earlier in the season I thought she might not be a fit to back up Kneepkens, but with her increase playing time and comfort, she is shooting and playing with much more confidence.
What can you about Vieira. We can talk all day about the layup to tie the game, and the steal in overtime in the corner in front of the UCLA bench, but I point to the 3 she hit early in overtime, again, like the McQueen scenario, not much happening, her defender didnât respect the shot (usually wise as normally Vieira would drive and look for a kick-out) and she swished it. Loved her laughing with the ref before a set of those free throws she nailed in OT.
Palmer still looks like she is rusty, she missed a pretty easy layup and does look a bit tentative on the knee still.
Johnson had a very quiet great game. Not only sacrificing her body playing interior defense against those bigs (she is not small but she looked like two of her would fit into Betts frame), but that 3 to start the scoring. Gave the whole team confidence right off the bat.
Finally, looking at the PAC standings and seeing Arizona at the bottom and knowing they lost to the Cats in overtime on the road, sure looks like a missed opportunity to have a bit higher seed at the conference tournament (and the NCAA tourney).
That certainly was a missed opportunity, but given the circumstances, it is understandable. Multiple players ill. McQween and Coach Rob with IVâs before game. Vierra throws up on sideline during warmups. Others ill as well. Some terrible calls at the end of the game.
Yes, thanks @UTEopia for giving the context.
One other thing I noticed while pooping around the internet today⌠Utah has played 5 of the current top 10 this year!! Record of 2-3. Also, none of the games they lost were blowouts.
That is amazing and shows how tough the PAC is in womenâs basketball. Life in the BIG12 will be a lot easier for Roberts with only Colorado and Baylor really to contend with.
Edited to add Kansas State who is also way up in the polls.
My feelings have been hurt far too many times.
