darn it. Lost 64-66. SOB
Totally BS call on Pilli in the waning seconds which cost us the game.
OTOH, how about that phantom jump ball that turned it over to us. Basketball officiating is just so inconsistent and overall horrible.
Just love Piliâs attitude and passion. Iâm hopeful Palmerâs return further improves our performance.
Too bad our 6â7" player doesnât add any meaningful minutes to the team. Pili could use a bit of a break at times.
SteggysâŚwhy McQueen had only 2 shots in 27 minutes? By design? Defense?
Your guess is as good as mine. She got a lot of touches and is a great shooter, probably my favorite player on the team. I wish Coach Roberts would let the players go for a midrange game. I donât understand why not.
So do you know whatâs going on here? Roberts thought she could be back on December 9th, now 6 weeks later she hasnât been on the floor and itâs been radio silence. Did I miss another injury/reinjury?
I know you asked Steggy, but, this is something I have posted before and I donât understand. McQueen plays some of the highest minutes on the team because she is a good defensive player, but she needs to shoot more.
Pili had a tough time down low because she was doubled by two players that are much taller than her (Brink [who is an all-american] and Iriafen [who might have played her best game ever]), and her beautiful inside Artis Gilmore type drop-steps, jukes and twists donât work as well. Pili usually can eat defenders up (because the players doubling arenât as big as those two Stanford players) and draw fouls. Not happening on those doubles last night. She did hit Johnson for open layups a couple of times off double teams, which was nice.
I agree with the above that Pili was literally and illegally mugged of the ball at the end down 1. I canât believe that Iriafen didnât get nailed for that. I also agree that the jump ball call just prior when Johnson tried to grab the ball while Brink was waiting to get failed was, umâŚ, interesting.
I hate to say things like this because you never know how a game is going to turn out in the alternate universe, but the final difference was two points, and the Utes lost two points at half because Wilke got off a shot just a bit behind the shot clock earlier in the game. Count that andâŚ
Some other thoughtsâŚ
-
Vieira played the entire game. She didnât quite have the speed at the end of the game that she usually has. We need Palmer back very badly.
-
Wilke had her best game as a Ute where she finally found the target on some 3 balls.
-
Shoutout to Reese Ross, a freshman who worked very hard trying to keep a senior all-american Brink in check. Tough job and she was admirable in the effort she gave.
-
Because of the wonderful defensive play and effort of Johnson and Ross, Brink was held to just 9 points and because of the great defense by McQueen, Jump, who has a killer outside shot, was held to 12.

If we could have found someone to contain Iriafen, it sure is a different game. Above it was mentioned that it is too bad that Nene Sow (6â8") hasnât matured into a player that the Utes could use in situations like last night with two bigs and you can only shut down one of them. Asking Pili at 6â1" to try to shut down someone that much taller is a tough ask of her.
The injury just didnât heal as fast as they hoped.
I asked Josh Furlong a couple weeks ago and he said they were still waiting for her to be cleared but there was no timeline.
Last night she went through warmups and they said she be back very soon.
I think that was a make up call for missing the shot clock violation. The shot clock violation was obvious to everybody in the building, except the refs. Why they didnât review it in the moment is beyond me complete repping malpractice.
Good stuff. I donât understand why we donât have another good option for either the 4 or the 5 position. Even last year it was clear â to me at least â that Pili was playing too many minutes and could use a spell. Plus, as this year is it for her, I thought we would bring someone in to help; also, as much as I like JJ, she could also use more help, especially on the defensive side.
To be fair, we did bring in a few 6â2" players.
-Hernandez: highly touted international player, but is injured.
-Blanck: TDS transfer. Hasnât shown anything.
-Crispe: Boston U transfer, hasnât shown shes got the tools. Hence, not many minutes.

âThough the refs had an impact late in the game, Utah had areas where it could be better, specifically on the offensive end where Utah shot 39% from the field and was outrebounded 40-32. Roberts said Kennady McQueen, who only had two shot attempts, needed to get more looks, while Dasia Young needed less.â
Utah women playing better early today up 18-9 over Cal after 1Q
47 -21 at the half. Utah with 42 points in the paint ( not too shabby)
Great win. The team needed it. And, perhaps more important, we did not have to heavily lean on Pili.
I loved it when the close of halftime interview with the Cal coach she said, they [the Utes] are playing pissed off. We need more of that as well.
Vieira was obviously very good this game, but I look at the growth of Wilke. She made all her shots today, which follows on a decent game against Stanford. This is good news as to scoring depth off the bench. Hope she can keep it up.
Big weekend with #6 USC and #5 UCLA coming into town. USC just worked over UCLA
Hopeful Palmer is ready to go. We really could use at least a split here.
Solid start from the Utes. Theyâre making it rain from 3 which has given them an edge.
Q2 32-20 Lady Utes. The skill level of several of these players on both teams is impressive.
37-28 Lady Utes at halftime. USC isnât playing like a top 10 school.
