2022-2023 Utah Basketball Thread

Larry (who I liked and I’m sorry things didn’t work out) was let go when he failed to meet expectations for quite a few years and received a handsome golden parachute. I trust his family is surviving.

rough one for Utah today. They had a shot to pull it out. Hopefully Rollies injury isnt too severe

By the U of Pay standard they granted Sean Miller, anyone who has ever been fired has been screwed over, so I don’t think that statement means anything.

I was just able to finish watching a recording of the game. The Worster injury was a big deal because when ASU started pressing the uTes really struggled. Too many TOs again.

But WTH was that flagrant 1 against Exacte? He’s falling down, not trying to throw a cut block. It didn’t make a difference in the outcome, but that call was horrible.

Utah is projected to be a # 4 seed in the NIT, Sam Houston State is projected as a # 7 seed. Bracketology 2023 - NCAA Tournament / NIT Projections (dratings.com)

A rematch between the 2 teams would be very interesting to see the Utes progression this season.

At his presser yesterday, Coach was not optimistic about Worster playing Thursday night.

A double whammy with 2 tough injuries to starters along with a challenging closing stretch of games. Going to take a great effort from remaining players to enjoy any more wins this season I’m afraid.

Worster will be out for a while. Hope he can be back by tournament. Won’t be 100% but lord knows every team in the conference will be full court pressing with him out.

It looks like the coaches did offer a couple of guys for that last scholarship.

“There were a few guys, to be quite frank. When we didn’t get the one guy, we had another guy,” he said, without naming names. “But there was a snafu and we couldn’t make it happen. I don’t know if it would have made a huge difference or not. I mean, the one guy, a couple of our assistants, as soon as they watched him, said this guy has a legitimate chance to be an NBA player.”

Does anyone know which players he was talking about?

4. Oregon 9-8 @ Oregon St , No Cals at home predicted finish 12-8 4th seed
5. Utah 10-7 Socals at home, @ Colorado predicted finish 11-9 5th seed
6. Wazzu 8-9 @Nocals @ Washington predicted finish 10-10 6th seed (Wins tiebreaker with win over AZ)
7. ASU 10-7 @ Zona @ Socals predicted finish 10-10 7th seed

5th seed! I thought we sucked ;). Great improvement - would be nice to win a game or two in the CCT, but injuries are going to make it tough. Good growth this year.

7 point underdog to the number 4 ranked team in the country.
At home, but without 2 started due to injury.

That doesn’t quite compute.

They could call an offensive foul/moving screen on #17 for UCLA every possession.

#17? There isn’t one in college ball.

Maybe it was 12 or something. I just know he never set a good screen. He was either moving into the defender, or sticking his butt or legs out.

Then again, what do I know.

I see both Branden Carlson and Stefanovic shot not-so-well.

I’ll give the Utes credit for not quitting last night when they were down 16 to a team with much better talent and national championship aspirations. Seeing Saunders break out was fun. It makes one wonder where that’s been hidden in practice because I’d have to believe if he were playing like that there he should have seen more court time.

I really like watching Jaquez’s game. Solid all around.

Maybe it’s just me, but Anthony seems out of sorts the last few games. He still does well on the offensive glass, but he turns it over more than he should and gets caught in bad spots with the ball too often. And that shot from … (shutter!). Keita has GOT to learn to move side to side while defending. He frequently gets caught turning across his body to chase the guy he’s defending, often ending that with a reaching foul. If he could fix his footwork on D he could be a beast defender.

That is one of the things I appreciate most about Craig Smith. His teams have no quit in them.

USC is only a 2 point favorite.
