They may have lost that title to Liberty University. I know locally they are probably very loud but these Liberty dudes are carrying a big complex.
Preaching the end of the world and calling it an education will do that to you.
Wouldnât it be better if the new coach at BYU is just slightly better than Boylen, so that he sticks around longer? You know, the just enough hope that ânext season will be betterâ thing.
Iâd say they should make it a calling for one of the members of the Quorums of the Seventy and consider that good enough - Presiding Coach.
Iâm sure he is. Totally apart from my rivalry sentiments, Iâve always thought that being an assistant coach anywhere is a step or two below being a head coach, especially in a D1 college program. Assistants donât have any experience being âwhere the buck stops,â such as dealing with alumni and donors, facing the press after a loss, making final decisions involving teenage egos and caprice, and having full responsibility for recruiting issues like those surrounding the transfer portal and NIL. If theyâve been in a college program as an assistant, they at least have some recruiting experience and know what itâs like to be sitting in a living room with parents and recruits. Coaches coming from the pros have no experience with any of these things. So if youâre bringing somebody into a D1 program, it should be someone who has succeeded as a head coach in a college program at a lower level or in another D1 program. Just my opinion. Weâll see how he does.
If Ryan Smith is committed to putting cash into byuâs NIL funds then Iâm sure getting talent wonât be a problem.
They seem to be doing the honor code differently for athletes. I donât remember the last time the HC office got a player kicked off a team down there. Iâm sure the kids are still doing what kids do, so maybe athletes get their issues swept under the rug, like when LaVell was coaching.
Agree about the NIL. I donât see any way someone would pony up 4.2m/yr for a coach and not even consider whether to get good players.
This Young guy may be the greatest, most home run hire ever. But thereâs no way you or I or anyone else can know AT ALL whether heâs a good or bad hire. He has no head coaching experience. No head coaching experience at DI college level, which is its own animal.
This is equally true for Alex Jensen and Johnnie Bryant, and why I would not want Utah to hire either if Craig Smith were replaced.
The overwhelming majority of head coaches donât succeed to fansâ (I would say uninformed) expectations.
There are always risks associated with hiring head coaches. But time and time again we see that the best way to mitigate that risk is to hire a head coach who has been successful as a head coach with another program. See Utah Stateâs proven sound hiring methodology. The problem is that this is often next to impossible to do.
As for BYU supposed recruiting advantages LDS kids, I bet any coach would trade those for inherent disadvantages at BYU because of Utahâs relatively low population and demography, and the Honor Code.
They found a coach, and last seasonâs undergrads seem to be jumping ship.
Not surprising in this new professional era of college sports.
On being clean shaven for the first time in a while
âWe had practice this morning in Phoenix as weâre getting ready for the playoffs. I walked in there, and all the guys were kind of looking at me, and we had a good laugh about it. Funny enough, my wifeâs been wanting me to shave for like 13 years, so the fact that here it is, sheâs happy about that.â
Doesnât the honor code office give out beard cards? If he plays his cards right, and gets permission from his bishop, Iâll bet they might issue him a beard card.
Why is it when I hear someone say the word âbeardâ I start snorting like Beavis and Butthead?
Thereâs that good taco place in Cottonwood Heights - âLone Starâ , they used to have an old car out front as a decoration that had hundreds of stickers on it. One of the bumper stickers read, âBYU not just for lesbians anymore.â Anyone remember that? It was an odd bumper sticker, but always made me laugh.
Will shave for Holmoe but not his wife? Thatâs a red flag.
All he needs is a letter from a physician saying he has a skin condition.
âBeard CardââŚheheheheheheđ
I guess BYU is more tolerant than the Yankees.
That figures!
byu is the Steinbrenner of âuniversitiesâ.
