Classic case of playing not to lose
Fire Whittingham
What is the purpose of the goal box? I get the penalty area, but havenât ever figure out the goal box.
The initial touch for a goal kick has to come from inside the goal box. Although refs arenât generally all that picky about it.
For goalkeepers, the box serves as a helpful positional reminder as well. Itâs really easy to drift slightly out of position when things start moving fast, and the box gives a reference without having to glance back at the goal.
Thanks.
That goal was badass
Was the red card deserved?
I didnât think so, but I donât know â â â â from shinola. However, how does that affect the next game? Also, what about when a coach gets a yellow?
Personally, I think that was a weak red
Probably. But to give it at that moment (via VAR, no less) after swallowing the whistle the entire rest of the game was some BS.
A gutty effort and a fun game. US was obviously the better team but that was a cojones check for sure. That free kick was brilliant. Not having Balogun for the next game is really going to hurt though.
As big a metalhead as I am, I really love the whole âCountry Roadsâ thing. Helps that I have a big soft spot for John Denver.
It is against Belgium, and I wasnât incredibly impressed with them today.
No way. Yellow at the very worst.
I could not agree more! But as it happened, I literally had no sense that the US would lose, or even struggle as a result. I would not have predicted the second goal though.
They are showing determination, maturity, and skill. This team is better than I was expecting.
Never seen a red for that, especially in WC knockout stage. There was clearly no intent, Balogun was moving the direction of the ball and he laid off immediately upon contact. The post game analysts called it BS, using that exact term.
Hey BIH! Thatâs what you get for having a coach that looks like Captain Kangaroo with a shaved head!
There is an appeal process, which I assume the US started about 60 seconds after it was given. They donât succeed very often, but that one is borderline enough to have a chance. Would make Flo available against Belgium.
Belgium didnât play well today, but theyâre very talented. WAY more than BIH was today. They can possess the ball better in the midfield and make lots of runs in the attacking third, which the US often falls asleep trying to defend. And our goalkeeping is shaky, at best.
With Flo, I would have given the Us a slight advantage. Without him and with Pepi likely starting (who I have yet to see do a single useful thing), Iâd put it as pretty even.
Didnât we do that recentlyâŚ?
Helps that they played at Azteca Stadium (7,350â) and play England there as well. Very difficult place to play due to the altitude and noisy crowd. Mexico is a good team (a little nasty, but âŚ) and âhome-fieldâ is a big advantage.
Read this morning that there is NOT an appeals process for World Cup games, and thatâs only in the professional leagues. So Balogunâs out vs Belgium no matter what, which sucks.
