Not sure if they will win many conference games, but the Utes are fun to watch. They run & gun & play good defense. Not much size & little inside game, but they shoot 3’s any time & any place. Some game they will get hot & beat a good team.
Tonight Mongolian Mike didn’t start for the first time, but it lit a fire under him & he was the leading scorer. Lohner is a good addition. Plays hard & physical.
Too bad no one attends the game. New policy at the 8 minute mark of the 1st half fans can move down to any seat.
Smith said this week has been the first time they’ve had the whole team available for practice, they’re finding their rhythm and timing just as the schedule gets much tougher.
Lovering had his best game as a Ute IMO. Keller is taking longer to find his game, but he couldn’t do anything for 5 weeks, so reason to think it’s coming.
Lohner’s muscle may not translate into a lot of production on the low block, but it may pave the way for other bigs to get some boards and put backs they otherwise would struggle with.
I feel better about Ausar’s game with the bigs coming back. He was asked to play a role that’s not his game, but he’s actually pretty versatile and probably our best defender.
Some people attend, like my wife and I. Anyway, the Utes looked pretty good overall. I like what Lohner is bringing to the table. He’s strong, goes hard to the basket, and is unselfish with the ball, making a couple of excellent passes for an assist. Sharvajamts really looked sharp during his hot streak in the first half.
They didn’t let up in intensity all game, which could have been easy to do when they were up 20+ for so much of it. Miro was trying too hard I thought and needed to let it come to him more. A couple of times guys tried to get too cute, like Mason Madsen’s awful behind the back pass attempt that wasn’t close to Lohner being able to use, but they reeled it back in. Good to see the bench clear and a couple of those guys score.
This is fun to watch, and you’re right about how sad it is that attendance is so weak. There are a lot of people there now with young kids, so maybe they’ll get hooked for the future. As for the current student body, they seem to not care a whit.
The student body seems completely oblivious that the school has a basketball team and they can (I believe) attend games with great court side seats for free. Where are all the enthusiastic students I see attending the football games?
It could be that its his last go around in college athletics but Caleb Lohner in both football and hoops so far has looked like hes having more fun than he ever looked at BYU or Baylor. Im happy for the kid.
My 8 year old has been hooked for a few years, and we often take some of his friends to get them hooked too. My oldest son (now a sophomore at the U) has also been hooked since he was pretty young. MUSS has been on their winter break for the last couple of games, and from what I’ve see they typically don’t show up as much in the pre-season. I’m optimistic we’ll see a see more students with the start of conference play and more meaningful games.
