In case you haven’t noticed, the Utes have started the season 5-0 so far. That includes a 4 game sweep of Pepperdine last week and a win against SDSU in the Tony Gwynn classic last night. They play Seattle today, then USD on Sunday.
It looks the game on Sunday will be on ESPN+. You can start early with your relaxing Sunday afternoon baseball watching.
Thanks for the heads up! 'm getting more & more into baseball.
Starting the season with a SoCal trip reminds me of when my boys were playing HS baseball and would start with a trip to San Diego… where they would get demolished by the all-year playing local teams. (Cushioning those results was the fact we were still in San Diego!)
This is the way that the Utes get good at baseball. Hopefully, Monfort money is helping. Either that or the guys coming in were not getting time and needed to play to showcase for scouts.
For those with interest, the Ute baseball team plays at 3PM MST today against Cal Baptist then tomorrow at 7PM MST. On Sunday, they play UCRiverside. Put it on in the background as you finish a Friday workday.
The Utes had a great weekend 4 game set over the weekend, splitting a doubleheader on Friday, then winning Saturday and Sunday.
The bats have been really alive and Matt Flaharty made two very very nice defensive plays at 2b in the 4-3 win on Saturday, with the highlight being a catch and flip with the glove to SS for a clutch double play in the bottom of the 9th with two men on.
The team is now 10-2 and next up is a three game set versus San Jose State Fri/Sat/Sun this week.
A much better stadium for professional ball than college. Because of my son’s time playing, I’ve been fortunate enough to visit a couple dozen college ballparks – mainly drawing a triangle between Virginia - Florida - Texas and back to Virginia, from small and beautiful parks like App State to large parks like Dudy Noble & Baum. BYU has a great facility. UVU is pretty nice as well. What set Smith’s park apart from others is that the field is always in perfect condition. The kids love that, but, Smith’s is simply too massive for most young players - 18, 19 and 20 years olds just don’t have the strength yet to go yard in the middle third at Smith’s, even with elevation and composite bats. The college game is all about doubles and dingers. Dingers get really tough at Smith’s for these young players. It fits the 25, 26, 27 etc year olds much better.
It’s my long-winded way of saying I think we’ll be happier with the new on-campus ballpark. I’m excited for it.
