Utah Softball

Congratulations to Coach Amy Hogue who won her 500th game yesterday at Utah. It came in the first of two wins yesterday against Southern Utah in St. George.

Congrats to Coach Hogue on a great achievement.

Last year the softball was not great as they were pretty young. Returning a lot of playes this year and are already 13-5, having spent all of February mostly in California playing in various pre-season tournaments.

MMMMMM…warm weather. Wins and good weather. Bingo!

two good games in PHX so far. I went tonight. It was great to run two pitchers out of the 2nd inning. 9 runs scored. ended up 15-0 mercy rule after the fifth.

last night they won 9-5 i believe that ASU was ranked coming into the weekend.

Indeed, I think ASU is ranked #21.

On Friday, it was indeed 9-5 with Utah scoring 7 runs in the 8th inning to break a 2-2 tie.

I didn’t watch Saturday’s game, but with the blowout, now 2-0 in Big XII play and 20-5 overall (with a 10 game winning streak). I would imagine ASU doesn’t get usually get a mercy rule win at home. Must have been a lot of fun to be there @arizonaute and see 3 homeruns and a 1 hitter from Maestretti.

Mia Gomez looks like a star on the come. Amazing that Hogue plucked her out of ASU’s backyard.

Differences so far between last year and this year. The line up is much deeper with good hitters (saw some truly patient and excellent at-bats so far against ASU) and the defense is playing very well.

To borrow a phrase from Bull Durham “…and kicked the ■■■■ out of Greensboro Arizona State in a three game set.”

Yesterday, an 11-6 win. Scored 5 runs in the top of the 1st and cruised.

also the bench did not stop with chatter the whole we were sitting right behind them. my favorite one was after a hit batter “hey leave our batter alone” entertaining game for sure.

Last summer I worked a couple of state level softball tournaments (for 14U and 16U). The chants from the dugouts were impressively creative and fun. Those softball players really know how to do that sort of thing. Though hearing that for five days straight, got a touch annoying.

Yesterday at Dumke the Utes whipped Abilene Christian 13-3 and 13-0 sweeping a doubleheader and today at Noon, a single game vs. Abilene. Take the afternoon off and go cheer the Utes.

The wins yesterday means that Utah now is on an 11 game winning streak.

And the Ski Utes win another NCAA championship!

The thing that is so exciting about this softball team is that a lot of the damage is being done by freshman. Coach has a good thing going right now!

A bit unfortunate to get the winning streak snapped by Abilene while leaving the bases loaded twice in that game. Timely and good situational hitting has been seen a lot this year, and I guess this type of game was going to happen at some point.

Let’s see what conference season holds. Already off to a 3-0 start.

Bravo Lady Utes 4-0 over #1 Texas Tech. Love the bouquet of bats to the winning pitcher!

That was hilarious how they just kept piling stuff on her head and in her arms during the postgame interview.

Great win! Lets get a series dub tomorrow!

To provide an update on the Ute Softball, They ended up winning the BYU series 2-1 (disappointing loss in the last game when they could have swept).

Yesterday, in a walk-off run rule game (10-2), they beat Arizona to take 2 of 3 in the series and finished the regular season very strong.

That win yesterday got them placed as the 7 seed in the conference championship tournament this coming weekend. They will play OkieSt, who beat the Utes in SLC 3-0 in a series a couple of weeks ago. The positive spin on that sweep is that two of the games were one run games with only the last game (a 2-4 loss) by more than one run. They can certainly compete with OkieSt, but the tournament is being held in OKCity, so they will have a “home” advantage.

Go Ute Softballers!!

I sure wish the tournament location was closer. I’d love to support the ladies. They are a hoot to watch.

Before I write about the game itself…

CONGRATULATIONS to Amy Hogue who managed her 1,000 game for the Utes. A great player as a Ute and now a great manager for the Utes. You could say she is a Ute through and through.

Now, the game, as said, the Utes are out of the conference tournament with the aforesaid 7-0 loss. It sounds bad, but it was a pretty classic pitchers duel until the bottom of the 5th. Maestretti was dealing. Then, in the way in MLB a pitcher’s effectiveness decreases when the face the lineup a third time, Maestretti was dinged for 5 runs in that inning.

The problem in the game was that the OkieSt pitcher had a no hitter until late when the Utes finally got a single. The Utes never got a player past first base. When Maestretti is dealing in the first five innings, you have to give her some offensive support. It just wasn’t there.

Congrats on a great bounce back season, and let’s keep all the great freshman from being poached.
