In the final CFP rankings. While disappointing that we couldn’t move up from our initial entry at #13 (lack of chaos and giving up 800 rushing yards in two weeks will do that), going from 5-7 to 10-2 and a top 15 finish is a pretty damn fine turnaround.
Agreed. And frankly, had Utah made the playoffs, they would have gotten rolled in a road game.
yes and
happy with the season minus some questionable analytics in the BYU game . Really hope Bird sticks around.
I see a lot of people having some angst about Bird or others leaving. I just don’t see it. Reportedly he has a lot of close friends on the team. He is already sharing playing time with Dampier who he is also close friends with and seems to be in an ideal situation. I get that conventional wisdom is you have to have a QB1 and a QB2 but it seems like a very unique situation here where you have 2 guys who are great friends who can move in and out of the game seamlessly. Usually the issue is ego and jealousy about playing time. I see none of that here. I could be way off base of course.
I hope he stays. Obviously, players are going to go. I worry about losing him and Bray.
i am only worried about deeper NIL checkbooks that are tampering/sniffing around our team ( i dont spend too much time worrying but a little)
According to folks who are closer to the program than I there is plenty of NIL money coming in at the moment and more on the horizon. It is just that Utah’s donors are quiet about things as opposed to other programs.
additionally Byrd hasn’t proven to be a solid passer (due to Utah"s scheme)., Maybe he is and we just haven’t seen it yet. I don’t think there are many programs that would pay for that skill set?
But what do I know?
Question for those in the know.
Is there a scholarship limit anymore? Or a limit as to how many players can be paid? Even if there’s a scholarship limit, schools can pay players a ton of money and then not give them a scholarship, thereby opening up a scholarship for someone else. Seems like a good way to get around any limits.
That’s been my concern. He’s absolutely a dynamic “change of pace” player, but can he make throws when we need it? He only got one full game this year, so I think it’s TBD.
One question I’ve got, and it has been in the back of my mind for a bit. What is the plan for Isaac Wilson? Supposedly Beck’s scheme fits him well, IIRC.
Just remember, no matter what process or system is put in place to try to keep things regulated in a fair way, someone will figure out a way to game it.
The passes I’ve seen from him seem to be really good - he can drop a pass over the top of defenders in between, has a strong arm, good touch. But there’s a big difference between a few impressive throws and running a full offense.
I’m sure he can do it, but it hasn’t been required this year in the short time to prepare for the next opponent. The experience Devon brought in reading defenses Byrd has not yet fully acquired. My guess is he’ll get much more of the playbook in bowl prep.
The offense we saw this year will probably change significantly next year, if I understand how Beck operates. We had road graders on the OL this year, so it was run heavy. If we can add some WRs from the portal, it may be quite different next year.
But the eyeball test!!! Fml I hate the ranking game
I sympathize, but it’s the system that is there. Don’t like it, find a way to change it. Or do something radical, get like minded folks to break away with you and make your own rules.
Pretty sure that’s clickbait.
Seen several articles about how vocal Vanderbilt has been with committee about their placement, but nothing that indicates they filed a lawsuit.
