I know I made a facetious response earlier, but you’re right. Gambling addiction is no joke. My wife is in the final work of wrapping up her family memoir, whether it goes anywhere after this remains to be seen, but her life story with her compulsive gambler father is wild. Yeah, I’m biased, but her second chapter tells of an early memory of them waiting for her dad in the lobby of a casino while he loses almost all the money they had, and it’s a tough read.

Her sister also lost over $250k to one casino in Mississippi as she struggled with her marriage.

That’s why I’m very concerned about how the pro sports leagues have embraced them. It will ultimately compromise it all.

Agreed. My flippant comment was directed at Texas Tech (who I will never have any sympathy for about anything) and not about Sorsby.

I sincerely hope he gets the help he needs.

I hope Sorsby gets the help he needs. That age group is ripe for gambling addiction. Hate all the new platforms and push by the leagues themselves. Lots of new articles on the perils of gambling and that it is not investing. The house wins. Individuals do not.

That being said, TT can pound rocks. Sorsby likely done (bet on Indiana while he was there - didn’t play so couldn’t influence game, but could have had inside info). Backup Hammond tore his ACL so won’t be ready until, well, probably timing is similar to Cam  . They paid a lot to retool their defense, but without a qb, might be tough going.

The only game I watched Sorsby play in was against the Utes, who made him look terrible. I can’t believe TT paid him $5M.

Yes, it was fun seeing him get all whiney and blame his team. Hammond (once Morton got hurt) made us look pretty bad. Either way, not likely we play them this year, even in the CCG because they ain’t making it.

anyone else take trips to Wendover during college thinking it was easy money?

Me either

I did. Mixed results.

I feel bad for the kids that gamble from their phones. They’ll likely never know the horrors of an I-80 rest room or stopping for a snack at that gas station in Delle.

After the NCAA upheld his suspension, a judge just overturned it because:

The ruling also said that Sorsby “demonstrated that he will suffer a probable, imminent, and irreparable injury if this Court does not issue this temporary injunction because he will be unable to participate as a member of Texas Tech University’s 2026 Football season.”

Yes, he was going to be unable to participate…because he placed bets on his own gorram team.

Seriously man, f*ck this. I truly hope he crashes and burns spectacularly.

Obviously the Judge just de legitimized athletic competition of all kinds with this ruling. All forms of result manipulation are now on the table, and in play.

Since they are, maybe all sport should be wearing bedazzled spandex, screaming into a microphone about how their team is the “Champions”, and games should be managed as spectacles…Welcome to the WWE 2.0.

This brings up quite the dilemma.

The NCAA is going to appeal, but the prevailing wisdom is that process won’t conclude until after the season ends. If the NCAA wins the appeal, then all of Tech’s games, wins, and any potential titles would be invalidated.

Which begs the question: should teams simply refuse to play Texas Tech this year?

It’s happening.

Maybe I am wrong, but Yormark could kill the whole thing by simply saying that any game played by Sorsby will not be counted by the conference (a forfeit) if he is used in even one game, they forfeit the chance to be in the champ game.

Also, the P4 committee for the playoff could say, no thanks, as well, so all the money they have spent to chase titles wouldn’t get them anything.

It would seem to me if TT decides to sue on those two points, chances are you get a judge who has a better head on his/her shoulders.

Ngl if this is allowed and the teams play then I’m out. It hasn’t been the sport I love for a while but this would kill it dead.

I get the whole addiction argument, but the FIRST bet he placed on his team disqualified him, not the cumulative bets over time. He bet UNDER on many of his teammates stats while being in planning meetings. He sent $ to others to hide it. Across state borders. He may have been illegally betting as Texas has an age of 21 for peri-mutuel betting (was he a Texas resident in Indiana?).

This is totally ridiculous. The pressure from other teams (UGA said they will ban ANY sport to play TT), the conference, and other ADs/football coaches is just going to be too intense. TT is digging in, but no one in the country except Raider Nation is behind this decision. He needs to declare for the supplementary draft in 3 days (6/12).

The injunction will be dropped after the season because it will be moot. The conference needs to say that if the injuction is not won (upheld in higher courts) and/or dropped, all games with him playing will be vacated. Take that bet? No. NCAA has appealed and can ask for an expedient ruling, but if it’s overturned, TT will appeal and it will stall. Just ridiculous.

Even a 2 game suspension is stupid. Why 2? Abeline Christian and Oregon State is why 2. Houston is 3rd game. Sam Houston is 4th game. @ CU is 5th game. ASU 6th game. My guess is they might offer 5 game suspension max, but it doesn’t negate that he made early choices that disqualified him.
