The official "What are you listening to right now?" thread

There was a brilliant cover of this on night 4 of the big Sanremo music festival in Italy a few weeks back. Id link it but the RAI national broadcaster removes everything 10 days later or so

I don’t believe I’ve ever heard or could recognize a song by Jay-Z, Snoop Doggy Dog, or 50 Cent. But apparently somebody is buying what they are selling because I sometimes hear this or that one is worth several hundred million dollars. I read today in passing that apparently there’s a drag queen named RuPaul who has a sixty thousand acre ranch in Wyoming, even if it is all dry sage brush, these incomes make me wonder, what the hell.

I like you.

RuPaul has created and produced multiple hugely popular TV series, he’s an actor, has written multiple books, recorded several albums, organizes and runs massive conventions, and does a ton of LGBTQ+ activist work. Saying he’s “some drag queen” would be like saying Oprah was “some talk show host”.

Nothing he does is up my particular alley, but he’s a very talented dude.

It might have to do with the fact that I don’t have Fakebook, Instagram, no Netflix, Hulu, Netflix, Disney XYZ+, etc., and my wife and I only have 7 TV channels that we get via the the antenna in my attic, which ain’t all that great either. When staying in a hotel and scrolling through the hundreds of channels it’s hard for me to fathom that people actually pay for such a video wasteland. Never owned a cell phone. Unfortunately, due to work requirements, I’ve been using e-mail and the internet before the World Wide Wed was created.

Since we’re talking pop culture, other than possibly consumerism, our country no longer has any cultural norms, hell, we can’t even agree whether there’s such a thing as a man or a woman, there’s no glue to hold it together, America is disintegrating, or more succinctly; Bread and Circus, Last Days of Rome.

Anyways, here’s a killer catchy earworm about that very thing from a group of queer German folks I had the chance to meet about a month ago. They were as delightful a group of human beings as you’d ever want to meet.

What we are is but a choice
A promise to ourselves
We are free to break and change

Never forget? Let it go
This or that? No need to know
Whether above or below
We are all from the same blood

Blood and glitter
Sweet and bitter
We’re so happy we could die

For those of you who were unfortunate enough to have to hear Seasons in the Sun. Here’s the equally absurd B side. Didn’t know this until a couple of days ago when we looking at a stack of 45’s that a friend of mine had that he got from a discount rack in the 70’s. He didn’t even know he had it. He just bought a whole stack and never really looked at them.

This one seems so apropos to today. Perhaps the MC was a touch prescient? Not likely, so much of what we whine about today was there yesterday.

LOL! Unbelievable! Coming from someone who is, unfortunately, old enough to have heard and remember Seasons in the Sun, I have to say that the B side, was the B side for a reason.

It turns out that, in fact, that you can’t make this ■■■■ up!

I heard Seasons in the Sun recently. I can’t think of a song with more key changes.

I learned about LotL last year, and was very impressed, even their results at Eurovision weren’t what they hoped.

They’re doing a US tour this September. If they’re coming anywhere near you, I would highly recommend checking them out live. They put on a truly incredible show.

Not coming to Salt Lake, unfortunately, but I’m strongly considering flying to Denver to see them there. And I almost never travel for one-off concerts.

A couple years ago I was cruising by the mid-station of Alta’s Collins lift, heard the tune/lyrics, Can’t Smoke Weed You’re Living in Utah, the lift attendant informed me of the name:

For those unaware, this is a play on a Woody Guthrie labor song.

We took the kids to see “Fiddler on the Roof” tonight. It was one of my parent’s favorite plays so we listened to it a ton growing up, but It had been a looooong time since I’d seen it on stage (probably 30+ years). I had forgotten just how incredible the music is

“Tradition” has been running through my head all morning.

Can’t give this enough stars… great music.

When I was a kid, my parents had quite a collection of recordings for all sorts of musical plays, played them all the time as sort of background music in the house (rather than the TV always being on) and when they bought a really nice new stereo system in about 1964, or 1965, the quality of the sound got so much better.

We didn’t attend live performances often as they were not wealthy and I was the oldest of 6 kids, but as I got older I started spending a lot of time and money on theatrical (occasionally Broadway) and eventually opera performances. There really is nothing like it.

it’s wonderful that you’re introducing another generation to such great music.

Same. There was almost always a soundtrack from one show or another playing in the house.

I know it goes against my death metal aesthetic, but I’m an absolute sucker for musical theater. We’re taking my daughter to this show at Eccles this afternoon for her birthday. Very excited.
