The womens hoops and softball teams exemplify the traditional college sports ethos, IMO. Mostly underattended, they don’t care. Generate your own enthusiasm, play and support your teammates, enjoy the experience and work hard on the academics. Easy to like.
One lazy Sunday on the couch I happened upon a Lady Utes softball game and was a little surprised to find I really got into it.
(Honestly, for a moment I was starting to feel just a little “weird” about this development… until the camera found Eric Weddle hanging out with his fam in the outfield.)
Before anyone thinks I’ve become a devotee of womens softball, if it’s not the Lady Utes I surf on past… or muster the energy to engage with the damn lawn mower.

And Utah is in the inaugural PAC 12 tournament championship! The Utes beat Washington, #2 seed, 8 - 4. Will play the winner of Stanford and UCLA.

Does that make seven championships this year? Football, women’s basketball, men’s tennis, softball, lacrosse, skiing, gymnastics. Any I’m missing? A great year for Utah athletics

Hopefully their massive wins over Washington and UCLA on consecutive nights plus the autobid are good enough to land Utah one of the 16 coveted national seeds. If they do, they will get to host a regional in Salt Lake.
