The lyrics from the title track used to get me in hot water when I sang along.
Someone was not a fan of kippers for breakfast, I take it?
Redford was a massive presence especially here in Utah. Jeremiah Johnson, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Electric Horseman, then everything Sundance.
He helped the State of Utah become acceptable for everyone who wasn’t of - or felt like they really didn’t belong to - the local heritage.
I’ll never forget his famous misstep where he said “Utah is such a great place, if it wasn’t for the Utahns”, which angered a lot of people, but held a kernel of truth. He then he graciously settled into the social fabric and put Utah on the map, internationally. He was the face for many here who felt like we didn’t fit into Utah society.
As travel to the still wild areas of Utah, I still think of Jeremiah Johnson a lot. Surviving, seeing the Utes thriving, respecting their culture, then foolishly getting talked by intruding white men into traversing Ute sacred land, and paying the price. Underrated but powerful movie.
RIP to one of the greatest voices in metal history. Tomas Lindberg of At the Gates passes from cancer at 52.
“Slaughter of the Soul” is one of my top 10 albums of all time, and they were a top 10 live show as well. Always a total blast to see and Tomas was an absolute madman on stage. Every metalhead in the world is giving a growled “GO” in his honor today.
We’ll definitely miss one of the best to ever do it, and f*ck cancer.
I’ve told people pretty much the same thing when they ask why I moved to Washington.
Ive been saying that the state is one of the most beautiful places on earth, with incredible diversity of terrain.
Compare that to the majority of the dominant culture being some of the ugliest (inside-wise) human beings who are world class fakers about being nice, and ironically have the tiniest diversity of mindset within that cultural setting.
As someone born in Ogden who spent 90 of their pre-adulthood year between Layton and North Ogden, and descended from 7 pioneer families, I’ve always been astounded at the contrast between that small segment of unbelievably kind and generous, even loving LDS members, and then the UTAH COUNTY/Mike Lee type who are among the most evil, vicious people Ive ever met.
Borrowed from a friend’s fB profile:
" “Well, y’all… I’m off to the big diner in the sky.
Until we meet again — kiss my grits! ![]()
”
Polly Holliday died yesterday at home at the age of 88. Best known as Flo in the sitcom “Alice,” she was iconic for her waitress attitude, often yelling, “Kiss my grits.”
She was the last surviving member of the original cast of Alice, after Linda Lavin, who played the titular role, died of lung cancer in December."
RIP to our beloved Flo. No relation to Progressive Insurance Flo.
AFAIK Philip McKeon is stil alive, but while important to the show as Alice’s son, was only an intermittent cast member.
Philip McKeon died in 2019. That whole cast of “Alice” is gone now.
really? That was tragically young. I hadnt heard.
Turns out he died on my 58th birthday.
“McKeon died in Texas on December 10, 2019, following a long illness”
Jane Goodall passed this morning at 91.
Just a remarkable human being all around.
Sadly, the lady of the house is no longer speaking.
I remember discovering this series on channel 7 here in salt lake back in the early 90s and absolutely adoring it. This woman left a great legacy of warmth and humor.
One of the best british comedy shows, ran from 1990 to 1995. Only a couple of cast members still alive, poor Richard (Hyacinth’s husband) passed away in 2019, with Liz, both Roses and Onslow also passing away in the last 30 years. The only two still alive are Daisy and Emmet.
Loved watching BBC comedies on Channel 7 (Good Neighbors, Reginald Perrin, Solo, Faulty Towers, Monty Python Flying Circus, etc.) Brilliant stuff.
Also brilliant – Mr. Bean, Are You Being Served?, People Like Us, Father Ted, 'Allo 'Allo!, and of course, who could forget Benny Hill.
One of the founding members of one of the great bands
Too young! She was hilarious in Baby Boom.
